      2005 volvo s40 dead

i was driving my 2005 volvo s40 on the freeway and it just died suddenly. im pretty sure i heard a click right when it died. the lights and everything seemed to be working fine but it died. so i pull over and it wont start... it doesnt even click when i turn the key. but there is a message on the dash that says "anti-skid service required"... so i took it to a mechanic and they want 500 to replace the starter. would a bad starter make it die like that on the freeway?

Sounds like nonsense to me, can't imagine any way a starter would kill the engine on the highway. If it could prevent the engine from turning, it'd have to be seized in the "start" position meshing with the ring gear, which I've only seen happen after a car has been left to rot and rust together for years on end, and even so it wouldn't have started in the first place.
I'd guess it's an electrical issue - the battery and the CEM connections in the footwell are common areas to check to start debugging.

Clean and tighten your battery connections, then check if your battery holds a charge at a local Autozone, i know its hard with the car not moving but that might save you $500.

      What does VIDA think?

I had something like this on startup after fuelling on a roadtrip. In my case, my V50 decided that it was in "limp mode" 250 miles from home. Unhooking the battery for ~5 mins & carefully re-powering persuaded the CEM that things weren't that bad, and normal operation resumed.

Agreed. Doubt it is the start, check the battery first and then the alternator. Just experienced this with our 2004.5 S40 in December as it flat out died with similar symptoms. We initiallaly thought it was battery, replaced battery, worked for a day. Then same symptoms. Turned out to be bad alternator.
