      XC60 in a collision

      The XC60 hit the BMW
Driver airbag not activated, damage to XC60 is greater than BMW

What is this on the Volvo's dash if airbag didn't deploy?

That looks like the passenger airbag, not the drivers. Given the hit was on the passenger side that seems appropriate. Not sure what the point of the original post was, though.

I thought the front is designed to crumble in to soften the impact?
On the other hand, sides of the car are designed to not crumble in?

      Exactly.

      This is a troll post.

The Volvo did exactly what it was designed to do. If you reversed the two models, the BMW would have done similar. The front end is designed to shed parts, and crumple, to dissipate energy and reduce transfer into the passenger compartment. If you hit something hard enough, the engine mount is even designed to shear off and the engine will drop downward so it's pushed under the vehicle instead of back into the passenger compartment.

Go watch a video of an F1 car crash. Their vehicles are made of carbon fiber and it's amazing some of the speeds they have crashed and survived (still too many tragedies occur, of course). Their vehicles basically disintegrate upon impact, but that breaking away of parts actually helps bleed off energy and reduce the impact to the driver. It's all intentional.

Contrast that to an old car. People used to brag about how they were "all steel" and you could hit someone and it would just dent the bumper a little bit. But ALL of that energy would be transferred to the occupants. Your body shop bill might be cheaper, but you also got injured more easily and more people died.

Modern cars sacrifice themselves to save human lives.

The driver's airbag was not activated
In this video you can see the activated side airbags. The collision is on the left driver side

The picture shows that the side and front airbags have been activated on the BMW
