Black specs appearing in rear view mirror

My rear view mirror has black dots, mostly towards the bottom. I'm assuming the paint on the rear of the mirror is deteriorating. Anyone have a solution for this? A step-by-step repair guide would be awesome. TIA.

Autodim or regular mirror? Either way, replace the mirror glass. Can't just replace the mirror assembly since the UEM is in it, and is keyed to the car.

Autodim. Do you have a part number for the glass, and any information on how to disassemble? TIA.

Grab one from a JY. Volvo only sells the entire unit ~$600. Carefully pry apart. Unsolder the 2 wires. Remove glass - either clips in or 2-sided tape. Use heat gun or hair dryer on tape to loosen it. Reassemble.

You can convert to a manual mirror by swapping your electronics over to a manual mirror unit.

You must keep your mirror electronics or face remote lock & sunroof issues. The only fix is to buy a new one.

I recently had to do this and it looked liked someone had scratched the glass from the back (creepy....). I got a used one and it's just as described above - open the shell, unsolder the two leads, and swap back in. I originally swapped the whole thing only to learn that the UEM is coded to the car.
One tip if you struggle with the separation of the mirror casing is to either keep it in a hot car or put it in a sous vide machine to soften the plastic tabs. Just don't let your significant other know you're aabusing kitchen equipment.

I also have a compass. I bought a non-compass autodim from eBay for $35 including shipping.

In process of fitting it. You CAN use the non-compass and retain the compass function. You just need to scratch off the backing material around where the compass goes. Will post photos comparing the insides of the mirrors in the next few days.

Uh...I was literally googling around for if a p3 mirror could be retrofitted into a P2 last night. I would imagine if we could transplant the UEM and the auto dimming glass accepted the same voltage adjustments, it would be fine? Just figuring out how to mount it on the existing mount point. Have you done research on this?

I haven't yet but I do plan on giving it a shot, probably in a few months. I can't believe how cheap SPA mirrors are new. I don't have the compass and as long as I can keep the stock wiring/sensors and drop them in the new housing I'd assume it would be fine.

The top is the circuit board with the compass function.

And here is the flip side of it, showing the segment display for the compass.

The top mirror is the original that I'm replacing. Notice the 'cutout' for the compass. This cutout is just an area of the mirror that does not have backing and is therefore not reflective and as such lets the compass display pass through the glass.

Using my scanner/printer made a copy of the original mirror with the compass cutout and I used this as a template for locating the cutout on the replacement mirror.

Scrapped away the backing. I should have used paint remover but I scratched it off with a knife which scratched the glass. Not the best result but good enough.

      Enjoy!

Here is the final product. The compass looks a little out of focus, partly because the camera focuses on the objects in the mirror and because of the scratches I made on the mirror glass because I used a blade instead of paint stripper to remove the area on the glass where the compass is located. This results in some distortion of the display. I'm not bothered by it because I don't really use the compass function. In fact if you didn't want to retain the compass function you simply wouldn't remove the compass 'window'. The compass display would be there behind the glass but you wouldn't see it.

The hardest part of the entire project was removing the double sided tape that attached the circuit board to the original mirror. As suggested in other threads I blasted it with a hair dryer to soften the adhesive and slowly and gently I pried the circuit board from the mirror.

I prefer the slightly golden tint that is present in the mirror I bought from eBay as compared to my original mirror.

Oh snap, I found one with a compass from a junkyard on Ebay. They wanted $144 and I offered $100. Sold.

Looks like I won't have to bother with scraping off the paint after all! Thanks so much for the photos and instructions above.

Nice! I'll post how my repair goes from a slightly less-experienced mirror disassembler $99 isn't bad at all though for the standard repair, $129 for the compass...eh?

Well done! I bought another mirror to attempt the mod using paint remover so I don't scratch the glass. Will post the results here.

Good idea I wanna buy some compass glass I think if I can find it for cheap enough, nabbed another non-compass piece at the junkyard for @ZZZZZZZ yesterday

Also I'm not 100% sure I didn't break something, need to test at night to see if it actually dims at all. Tried flashlight in the light sensor but didn't seem to change
