      3rd battery in 3 years - what's wrong?

Just bought a pre-owned 2016 V60 in late 2019, service history indicated the battery was replaced at 19k miles, though no other reason was given. Brought it in for 30k maintenance today and was told I'm getting a(nother) new battery, because mine was going bad (just over 12 months old). This means the car is on its third battery in just over 3 years. Today there's no cost to me, but I don't want to be on the hook for the cost of a new battery every year or two.

Are there parasitic current issues or other problems I should be asking about? Does Volvo use ****ty batteries? WTF?

Do you know if the battery counter is being reset every time it is being replaced? Also, is it actually bad, or are people just telling you it is bad? Do you know how they are obtaining that info?

Didn't own the car the first time the battery was replaced. Today they just said, "You're getting a new battery. It was going bad." I'm sitting at the dealership waiting, so I haven't had a chance to ask more questions. What questions should I be asking?

Obviously that is odd to replace 3 batteries in 3 years. I would just ask what is going on and if there is an underlying electrical problem and voice your concern about not wanting to go through this when it is off warranty. You shouldn't be replacing batteries that often.

Lots of threads on this over in the XC60 forum. Look for RDAR update, Sirius parasitic battery draw

Dealership said "it was just a bad cell," and that the first battery was likely replaced because the owner didn't drive much (again, I've only owned the car for 3 months). I asked about the RDAR update and they said all software was up to date. It seems like there's a new software update every few months though, so not sure how to confirm if mine is current.

Still have about 5 months left on warranty, so is there anything I can do to ascertain whether this new (third) battery is holding up as it should, or if it's slowly dying and I'll be stuck with the full cost of a 4th battery just a few months after the warranty expires?

Make sure you get the dealership to do the Battery Reset through VIDA.

Doesn't the battery carry its own warranty (regardless of the car's warranty)?

My wife's 2013 S60 had some battery issues a few year ago that have since not been a problem. About 3 years ago (the car was 3 or 4 years old at the time) we were at a gas station 5-10 minutes from our house on our way to dinner and after filling up, the car wouldn't start. It had some juice, but not enough to turn the car over. We got it jumped and brought it to the dealer. They replaced the battery and all was fine. A few weeks or a couple months later (can't remember exactly how long), it started acting up again and she got the low battery alert. We brought it back to the dealer and they replaced the battery again, claiming that it was a bad battery that had most likely been sitting on the shelf. They had checked it out at the time and all was fine, but it had since gone bad. They checked everything out again and everything looked good.

We have since had no issues with the battery and the car tends to sit for some rather long periods of time since its been relegated to 3rd vehicle status. I keep a jumper pack in the trunk just to be on the safe side, but we haven't had to use it. Could be you just had some bad luck and received some batteries that checked out fine, but were on their way out from sitting on the shelf for too long.

I don't know about current policy, but it used to be that replaced parts during warranty were warranted as original parts to the end of the vehicle warranty. The principle is that the part isn't purchased by the vehicle owner and the parts warranty is property of the purchaser (Volvo). I would be interested to know what the current policy is.

Anything replaced under factory warranty retains original factory warranty until factory warranty is expired.
If battery replaced after warranty period, battery comes with 2 year warranty.

      So...

      1) Any way to figure out what software version I'm running (and if that version includes the RDAR update)?
      2) Any way to check, in a few months, if my new battery is starting to die like the previous two (so I can address the issue before warranty expires)?

I had my battery replaced under warranty in month 47 of the 48 month warranty. The dealer told me that the warranty terms were the longer of the remaining factory warranty or 90 days.
