      S70 front bearing-like noise

      Hi all,

My 2000 S70 has noises coming from front that have me stumped and I am hoping that someone can help with what to check next. When going down the road I am hearing what sounds like a bad wheel bearing noise even after replacing both front wheel bearings and rotating front tires to rear. Still the noise persists. It correlates with road speed and is invariant to having the car in gear or in neutral so am thinking its not a CV shaft although it sounds like it could come from one otherwise although I have replaced those recently.

I've also spun the rear wheels to make sure that the noises were not coming from the rear bearings and also I checked the strut mounts too as I have heard those mentioned as possible culprits.

What would be the next thing(s) to check ? I've heard something about a transmission bearing which may make sense as I don't think the noise is more on one side or the other. But I'm not seeing anything more than a mention so if that is the next thing maybe more on what to check if that is what I need to check next.

ANY help would be much appreciated!

      Thanks all,
      Martin

So should I just replace the passenger side shaft ? I may or may not have replaced that in the past. Thanks!

Pull it and give the bearing a spin. If it feels smooth and is quiet, thats not it. If it doesnt spin super free and or growls.....thats the culprit.

Just FYI the NA cars are 5 speed auto and use a different axle design than 4 speed auto/manual. Not sure what you have just leaving that information for either scenario.

That got it and it seems that the offending half shaft was the original one with 197k miles on it.

      Many thanks!
