Unlike Rick Moranis, I do not want a spaceball in my Volvo

So I don't know what the deal is with car makers and the movie Spaceballs.... First Volvo and the spaceball then Tesla and ludicrous speed.

I have a spaceball shifter and I don't like it. I'd like to trade someone for a standard shifter. I'll post a picture of the connections on the spaceball. If you've got the same connections on a standard shifter and are willing to trade let me know.

May the schwartz be with you!

What trim do you want? Auto and non spaceball use the same plate. Just need the boot to match and you should be good to go

According to what I read, the shift knob is different as well. The spaceball knobs you push down and twist counterclockwise. I believe the standard knobs you pull down on tabs under the boot. It's going in a 2001 v70, but I liked the feel of the 2004 shifting. The 2004 has different cables and a counterweight on the transmission lever. I believe I need a shifter out of a NA car.

Here's a 6 speed C30 knob I took to an upholsterer to have a boot added to the shifter plate deleting my Spaceball. The C30 knob installs the same way (pushdown and twist).

Without the spaceball surround that would really do it for me. Nicely done on that retrofit!

All you need is the C30 6 speed shift knob, no other parts. Remove the shifter trim, then Spaceball (just unclips), aand take the knob and shifter plate to an upholsterer.

So I Should clarify here. The donor car is an '04 S60 5speed w/spaceball. My car is an '01 V70 T5 stickshift. I can't use the '01 shifter because the cables are different on the '04. I want the '04 transmission and cables because the shift feel is better. The plan is to put a stock s40 woodgrain knob on a shifter compatible with the spaceball shifting cables. Lloyd Dobber put the s40 knob on his '01 v70 T5 shifter and that knob is the same for s40 stick shifts from '00 to '08 or so. The spaceball knob mounts differently than the '01 V70, so I know they are not compatible.

So I thought I'd throw it up here first to see if anyone wanted to trade or maybe someone has a shifter they want to sell. If not, I'm doing a junkyard tour of the NorthEast this summer and I'll pick one up cheap.

Not that it matters but you're mis-remembering, I used a S60/V70 wood knob. It was the straight key with retaining clip under the boot design. P/N 8671187.

The “stock” non spaceball shifter is pretty nice but the boot ends up being kinda expensive from volvo:

Shifter plate is the same as auto cars. Boots are -04 or 05+ specific but they are cross conpatible it’s just that the -04 in the 05+ sits a quarter inch low.

I’m running the sport knob to match the sport wheel and a basic boot. There is a leather “sport” boot but it’s not amazing enough to warrant buying imho

Over the winter break I swapped my 2001 cables and shifter for 2004, and can confirm that the Turbo and NA cars have exactly the same shifter. It was more painful than expected (see my bracket posts), but well worth the upgrade IMHO, specially with SNABB shifter to tunnel bushings.

Thanks Chris - I had the P/N right but I thought in the thread it was a from an s40. No wonder I couldn't find one - I've been searching the junkyards. And they raised the price of those things, they are $157 at Tascsa now.
Mr. Brick - Is that your '03 V70? Looks good. What is the light button on the center console?
Zak - I'll check out your posts. And it was a pain just getting the stinking cables out of the donor car!
