      Front Brakes

I brought my car to the dealership to get a wheel bearing replaced. I plan on replacing my front brakes when I get the car back as the are warped. Out of curiosity I asked how much it would be to have the brakes done. I was quoted $480 for rotors only as the pads still have a lot of life left and $800 for a complete brake job. Am I missing some complex step in changing the brakes? Seems like a straight forward job.

Easy to do, you don't have to mess with the electronic parking brake in the rear.
Only thing that gave me trouble was the hex head screw that holds the rotor to the hub - they were seized on mine when I bought it.

Buy an impact gun from lowes or home depot. I have a battery powered kobalt 24v and it backs every bolt out. You'll save thousands. They cost around 150. You can do the job easily yourself if you have time. Fcp.com sells lifetime parts

Typically, pads are changed with rotors, as the old pads can transfer their wear pattern to the new rotor.

You'll need a set of hex bits for the slide pins. My XC90 needed a 9mm hex for the front brakes... it's a pretty uncommon size. As you're in MA, you might want to consider caliper hardware. IPD has it all.

10 years ago when I finally had enough of mechanics gouging me for work, i was told to start with brakes if I was interested in diy-ing given how simple the assemblies are. Well, still not sure of the wisdom of that given how much is riding on getting the job done right but they were right - brake work is very easy and does not require much in terms of special tools. There is also some $ to be saved.

What you find out really quickly is that anyone can replace pads and rotors but only you will take the time to properly clean the sliding pins, bracket contact points, inspect dust boot, flex hoses, etc. Once you have done it once, and decide you have a knack for it, you will not want anyone else ever touching them again!

100% TRUE. I don't want anyone touching my car now unless I simply cannot do the repair.
