2011 XC60 Timing Gear and Chain wearing out, fix or not?

      2011 XC60 Timing Gear and Chain wearing out, fix or not?

      I was hearing a slight rattling kind of noise intermittently for a couple months, but now almost always when idling. No error messages, no performance issues.

      The mechanic said my timing gear and chain were wearing out, and that it would be a $5k job, which doesn't make sense for this car, even though it's in great shape otherwise. Mileage is 92k.

      How long can I drive it? My work commute is 4 miles.

      It's probably the stupid torque rod engine mount that's bad and the engine mount underneath that. I highly doubt it's the chain... My IPD Poly torque mount radiates the chain noise when cold out because the polyurethane is hard when cold. I thought my chain was failing when the temps came down into the single digits. The mount was so cold and hard it created a lot of engine chain noise only in the cabin. I bet your oem mount and torque rod is toast and need to be replaced. Super easy and cheap fix.

      Never seen or heard of a timing chain failing on the Si6 engine. Certainly not impossible, but I'd want a second opinion for sure.

      Get another opinion. The one way clutch on alternator, one way clutch on serpentine drive pulley, or one of the idlers are far more likely problems. The bearings in the gear drive unit (Rear engine auxiliary drive, READ) can fail but that noise tends to max out at 1700-2100 RPM and not be too loud at idle or at high engine speed.

      Could also be a worn water pump or serpentine belt tensioner or idler.

      All the suggestions already mentioned are more likely than the timing chain. Get a second opinion from a tech who specializes in Volvo (dealer or indy Volvo shop).
