      2020 S60 T8 R-Design

My dealer just cancelled my order for a 2020 S60 T8 R-Design and said that Volvo doesn't have the materials and is cancelling all of them for the rest of the current MY.

Anyone know if there's any truth to this or not? I'm not inclined to take them at their word as they've been pretty weird about this whole process for the last couple of weeks since they've had my deposit...

      Any insight would be appreciated!

Interesting. There is some patchy evidence online that starting MY21 B5 and B6 mild hybrids will replace T5 and T6 versions, but I haven't seen anything about T8 plug-ins. Maybe GrecianVolvo can provide some information.

My local SoCal dealers have a good number of S60 T8's in stock, including a few left-over 2019's at $14-15K off MSRP. Maybe Volvo overproduced them and saturated the demand, or people are wary about the complexity of the powertrain, not sure. Still very few S60's on San Diego roads in general, even though I get compliments on my R-design from random passers-by.

Wonder if this could be due to supply chain issues cause by the coronavirus.

I just had another dealer tell me the same thing, so it looks like it's true. Hopefully ordering for MY21 isn't too far away, I was starting to get excited about this!

Several months ago, Volvo had quite a few left over 2019 S60 T8s and those were offered to Volvo employees at very attractive rates. Several at my dealership took advantage of the offer and they love the S60 T8 with its power and fuel economy. Whether a lack of parts or lack of demand, its unfortunate as the S60 T8 is a great commuter car.

I agree. I am really flabbergasted why the take rate is low for this vehicle, especially in CA, where Tesla's and miscellaneous hybrids are literally on every corner. Design is top notch, performance is great, real-life pricing is attractive. People are lemmings and would rather buy a Toyota? Maybe early reviews (somewhat underwhelming for various reasons only auto journalists care about) created a stigma... Too bad. My wife loves her XC60 T8 - really a perfect commuter, as Chris said.

Speaking of mild hybrids - I understand why Volvo is doing it. They estimate "B" versions will further improve fuel economy by 10-15%. Still, I am very happy with my T6 and don't regret it at all. Especially since I got it with a huge discount - easily five times the savings I would get on gas if I went with MY21 mild hybrid. On a separate note, we had some heavy rain in SoCal this week - I'm very impressed how stable this car is on wet roads

My totally unqualified take on the T8 S60:

Volvo has been so conservative with this model that there isn’t anything that is a particular draw to it. It looks exactly the same as the T5 and T6. 30mpg rating vs 25 in the T6, it’s not remarkable in a consumers mind. As a performance option, it’s faster than the T6 sure, but there is nothing else to go with it, no special handling, trim or looks to differentiate it. Due to the early problems with hybrid braking so many reports were that the T6 was a better package without the hybrid complexity.

So trying to put myself in the mind of someone who might buy the T8, and as someone who does have the T6, it’s hard to see what the emotional draw is.

Not saying anything about the technical merits, I just think most cars aren’t sold that way, they need to create the “want” to get people to spend the dough and I don’t think Volvo has done that with the T8 S60

Shortage of batteries for the hybrids is the word this side of the pond.

I hope this doesn't cause problems for the cars assembled in Sweden. At least I haven't heard about them cancelling our XC60 T8 yet.

This is in the UK but I’m away to speak to my dealer tomorrow.

I’m supposed to be dropping off the dashcam for them to fit when my V60PE is delivered but I’ll be asking about corona as well.

I would think there will be some sort of delay as the euro countries are locking down their borders as best they can at the moment

Probably not very helpful info wise for US deliveries but speaking to the sales manager this morning there seems to be no delays at the moment with any of their ordered cars.

Apparently orders have dropped significantly because of covid though.
