      Xc70 4C alternative

      Hi guys,

Thats the first time I come to the XC forum.

May I ask you is there is an alternative to the 4C struts? I have a 2010 XC70 with 4C and I will have to change the struts soon.

I saw there is Bilstein B4 on IPD but they specify it will not fit XC70 equiped with 4C

I dont care to have a code, a warning, or the 3 buttons disabled.

Anyone know if its possiblie to replace the 4C with something?

      Xc70 4C alternative

Did you ever like the 4C system at all? They say it is awesome!? Or overrated?

Actually i own a 2007 s60r since 2010 and its better on the s60r beceause it affects the throttle. So on advanced setting the car is really agressive and drasticly get firmer. On the XC, the advanced setting dont affect the throttle and the suspension is not that firm. So on comfort mode the car bounce so much you never use that setting.

Sport mode is very bouncy too but not as much as comfort

Honestly, its not that aewsome but ok.

I think its not worth replacing it due to its high cost

You see in the s60r forum many would never replace it and other hated it.

I would fall in between :-)

Someone more knowledgeable than I should chime in soon, but I'm pretty sure that the Bilsteins will physically interchange without an issue. I seem to recall that there is some way to trick the ECU into thinking the 4C are still installed so that the car doesn't produce a warning, but I'm not sure of the process.

On the R's I believe it involves tearing the sensor out of the old 4C strut and leaving it connected. That may be applicable here.

This does work, however, when switching shock types you do need to also change springs. The 4C springs are much softer than a standard spring.

Yo Eric, if you decide to put the Billies on would you be so kind as to report back with your findings? I'm also looking to replace the whipped stock shocks on our 09 with 93K miles on them... I want an upgrade but Mama loves the way the car rides so I don't want to sacrifice too much in that department.

Most seem to choose B4. B6 not done? Too harsh?

All I say below applies to the P2 (2007) XC70!

There are no rear Bilsteins that fit the XC70 directly (without modification).

I have a 2007 XC70 on which I disabled the 4C. I cut out the actuators from the 4C struts (angle grinder with cutoff wheel), and sealed them up in waterproof packages made from bicycle inner tubes. Then I strapped the front ones under the hood, and the rears to the body in the rear wheel wells.

The front sensors are also strapped under the hood. Rears are still attached to the rear suspension.

There are no codes set since the whole system is still plugged in.

I used stock XC70 Sachs dampers front and rear.

      I did not swap springs.

Ride is far superior to the worn out 4C system. It was crashy and uncomfortable regardless of setting, right from new.

This is the thread I followed:

And this one is probably of interest:

Whoa whoa whoa there. I got confused between your 2010 (P3 chassis) and your 2007 (P2).

My 2007 is a P2 and my info is for the P2 chassis.

I'm sure that the P3 will be different!

Your right yours is for the P2 chassis and mine is P3 (2010 XC)

But that still interesting info :-)

I have a 2007 s60r with a lot of mod but the car still have the 4C and im not sure if ill keep it or change it.

The car has a Piggy back AEM infinity so when the fine tuning is done I dont know if the 4c will still work lol

      Here some pics

That pictures is the custom exhaust manifold the tuner just finished yesterday

I told him thats Art Worth sharing I think

Mmm hmmm.. that is gonna be fun

Man, sucks about the rear shock situation for you P2 guys... I was surprised by the limited options for the P3 platform, but at least we have a few choices (a few generics, KYB, Sachs, Koni, Bilstein.) I come from the world of Miatas where there are probably 30+

I was personally thinking B6 because I'm used to cars that handle like they're on rails, but the B4 would likely be a good compromise since she drives the car as much as I do; superior to OEM, @Prolix Argon has used them on at least one of his rides and is happy with them, price is right, and hopefully retains some semblance of the plush ride we are accustomed to in this car.
