My goodness, knowing that there are actually P80s in North America being driven in grassroots motorsports makes me so happy.

It looks like your installation is much more robust. You don't have anything that can come loose. I wish someone could develop a baffle using aluminum. It will be nice if the baffle can be welded to the oil pan.

I hope it痴 robust! The screws are aluminum and will be TIG weld sealed to the pan, and the stainless nuts will be tack welded to the baffle cage. I believe it will work well.

TD04 turbos weren稚 designed for high boost, so Mitsubishi didn稚 push the limits of manufacturing process during that time. Fast forward 20 years and we池e now tuning these cars to 20 PSI and trying to achieve accurate and consistent boost control.

Unfortunately the wastegate is heavily shrouded and blocked from the exhaust outlet causing slow and somewhat unpredictable boost control and difficulties during tuning.

Fortunately it just takes a couple hours on the bench to remove the excess casting material to directly expose the wastegate to exhaust pressure and enhance boost control

This is before and after of the same TD04 7cm^2 turbine. There are various versions of the 7cm^2 turbine housing and the 760 is thought to be the best. I own a damaged 760 and this housing will be better.

Oil pan project is wrapped up. It holds 7 quarts and should be adequate for oil control.

The Aluminum Ultra-Wide Flanged Button Head screws are TIG welded to the exterior of the pan for sealing, and the SS nuts on the interior are tack welded to the trap door dog house to ensure they stay in place.

Focusing on the dash swap this week. The 850R and P80 V70R dashboards, air handling, and harnesses are laid out in the garage. I need to decide if a full electrical swap or a hybrid is the best approach.

Spent a little time repairing and reinforcing the P80 V70R dash today in preparation for install in the 850. One tab had completely failed and I was fortunate to find bits to rebuild it, one had failed but was in tact and easy to rebuild, and two were totally in tact, so I reinforced them to prevent future failure.

All tabs have four layers of repair; two local repairs per side of tab and then larger contiguous layers (2 layers of each interwoven, smaller / larger). The epoxy is marine grade, high strength, medium cure with a structural fastener additive.

I had to reshape the tab that had totally failed and am really happy with the result. I absolutely hate dash rattles.

      850R track car transformation

Going to steal this idea Including the dash flock from another build. Will. Probably add oil pressure and water temp in the 2 DIN audio area later.

Nice dash repair! And that's a good looking ABS module too

I'm assuming the VR dash come with a center speaker? That's what the tri-pod looks like it mounts too. But I'm sure you already have ideas for mounting them so they look decent lol

Dash repair is complete and ready for flocking. Ortiz Custom Pods is going to make the three gauge modification to the dash speaker grill.

Cycle time for Ortiz is a couple weeks and the dash should be flocked as an assembly, so I have a little time to get the 98 V70R electrical and air handling back in the car.

      850R track car transformation

The car is prepped for the V70R dash, air handing, fuse boxes , and electrical harnesses. Really glad I had a complete donor car because the extent of conversion necessary wasn稚 obvious at project start because I couldn稚 find a full swap write-up.

I致e decided to relocate the battery to the back of the car and I might also incorporate a ballast box to help F/R bias.

Good move. I've been thinking about this too. I think battery relocation will definitely help with the balance. With increased length of the battery cable, you may marginally gain weight; however, it should be worth it. You can always offset the weight gain with removal of the sound deadening materials ;-).

Makes a world of difference with a good audio system. I知 this case it will be 5 cylinder music.

Happy to be wrapping up some of the smaller bits. The 1 bar Kinugawa wastegate actuator and IPD HD CBV with 14 lb spring arrived today, so the turbo is done.

The wagons area already nearly a perfect 50/50 weight distribution, so the gain if any will be negligible.

I can see that with an AWD car CJ, but I find it hard to believe with the 855. I would think that moving just a little weight from in front the front axle to the far rear would have to make a difference.

My experience with weighing a fwd 99 t5a wagon (pewter) was that it had 67% front axle weight, semi biased towards the passenger front without driver in the car. That痴 with full interior and 斗ight cargo aka toolbox ect and I believe that it was a half tank of gas for some reason. I remember the whole car was 3200 lbs. I didn稚 write down the corner weights or bias across the diagonal. This was 4 years ago. Probably time to do it again.

Well with the interior completely removed, possibly, but look it up an 850 in factory dress has a nearly 50/50 weight distribution.

I've tried to find the article, but can't seem to find it. I'll keep looking.

CJ - I think this is the first time I致e ever been in disagreement with you! While you can never truly believe what you read on a forum, this seems more in line with what I壇 expect from a long car without a rear transaxle or even differential

That's pretty close Jared according to this spec sheet. Not as close as I recall reading.

      Wheelbase 2660 mm 104.7 inches
      Track/tread (front) 1520 mm 59.8 inches
      Track/tread (rear) 1470 mm 57.9 inches
      Length 4720 mm 185.8 inches
      Width 1760 mm 69.3 inches
      Height 1415 mm 55.7 inches
      Ground clearance
      length:wheelbase ratio 1.77
Kerb weight 1545 kg 3406 lb
      Weight distribution 57% front
fuel tank capacity 73 litres 16.1 [19.3] UK [US] gal.

      850R track car transformation

It's possible that the 60/40 is for dry weight and 57/43 is wet weight. 73 litres of fuel weighs 57kg/125lbs, and 8L of coolant + 6L of oil would weigh about 13kg/29lbs, so an additional 44kg/96lbs to the rear. I haven't checked the math but it seems ballpark.

Looks like Jaryd's article is about an N/A model, so the turbo'd models are probably a bit more front-biased than 60/40 from the additional turbo-associated weight

I致e been really fortunate to find the right mix of parts for this build so I知 going to capture it and hope it helps someone with a future swap.

Starting with the 2000 RN (1999 - 2000 engines only) engine that uses a hybrid cooling pipe that works with the TD04 water lines, and accepts the N accessory bracket, which is a big deal for AC delete.

Secondly, finding a 1998 MY was huge for the dash swap and I didn稚 realize how important it was as the time. I bought the donor car specifically for the dash, so it could have been any P80, 1998 or later. As I got deeper into the project I decided to swap the fuse box(s) and engine harness also because this was the easiest way to ensure functionality and keep the project clean. A 98MY donor was critical and fortunate because it痴 the only P80 facelift year with Motronic 4.4 (99 and later are ME7) and the ECM / TCM box is integral to the fuse boxes and engine harness.

This is the 1998 V70R engine harness all cleaned up and ready for new sheathing.
