      Carpet

So I’m restoring my P1800E. Does anyone have a recommendation for new carpet? I’m in the US. It’s the brown carpet.

If it is the really short nap carpet like used on my 1971 142 E, the stuff is remarkably durable. When I restored my 142, I pulled the carpet and used a rental carpet shampooer to clean it. Despite being short nap, I had to shampoo around 4 times before the catch tank in the cleaner was coming out clean. The carpet was a bit faded in spots so I stuffed the carpet into a large contractors heavy plastic garbage bag, added hot water and 3 or 4 packages of the appropriate Rit brown fabric dye, sealed up the bag and swished it around a lot. After rinsing, it actually came out looking quite good and has been colorfast . I did have to rebond/retape the seams because the extended cleaning, dye bath and rinse kind of destroyed the 40 year old adhesive. There are also spray bomb automotive carpet paint/dyes that I have never used; but, I have acquaintances who have used them and have been happy with the results.

I did this about 7 years ago when there were no carpet kits for the 140. VP Auto, Scandcar and I think CVI offer kits for the 140 and they certainly offer them for the 1800. The kits are not cheap. With shipping you are probably well north of $500. My cleaning / dyeing exercise took 2 days if you include the drying time and cost me about $50 for rental, cleaning and dye supplies and tape. If your carpet fiber is in good shape (no worn spots or tears) its an option if you have the time. Otherwise, it probably VP, CVI or Scandcar. All of those are good suppliers.
      A 142 of course. What do you expect? I'm the 142 guy. / 1971 142 E 102 color

As 142 Guy said, VP sells it and they're in the US.

It's interesting to read about a restoration process that works, though. I hate throwing away old car parts even if they're unusable- I suppose hoarding is in my future.

Has anyone used this carpet? My carpet wasn’t salvageable or worth salvaging. It wasn’t original anyhow.

I installed the VP brown carpet kit last year.

Very happy, perfect fit, well crafted, zero disappointment.

Go for it, worth every penny.

Confident you'll be happy with it.

I only stabbed the carpet snap prongs under my thumbnail 9 times, see if you can beat my record. No seriously, try to beat my record hurts like hell.

      Good luck!
