You should get your hands on an OBDLINK LX from obdlink.com. I used it and an old android device to get the mileage from an R running motronic 4.3.

I tried using the generic OBD ELM units, they never worked for me. It's possible that like you said, Fenix 5.2 will not communicate to anything other than a Volvo System Tester or a blinking code tool. I wonder if it works with VOL-FCR?

Thanks CYB3RBYTE I'll look further into the OBDLINK LX

In the mean time I decided that a bunch of wires and pins for the flash code was rather messy looking so I cobbled together an old OBD plug and LED to make a neater unit. Just waiting on a momentary switch arriving to finish it off

I eventually managed to connect an OBD2 dongle to my 850 and do a scan using the 850 OBD-II app from Google Play

I did a full scan which showed up a bad solder joint on the ABS module which I suspect is a historic DTC and have cleared it ready to rescan once lockdown is over

I reset the service light which was last reset 23,550 miles/5.5 years ago but has had several services since according to my paperwork

My milometer is 857 miles out from the reading on the speedo which is showing 59063 and the app showing 59920 which could be the reason for the low miles showing on the MOT history between 2008-2009

The dongle I used was a Proscan. I initially bought an ELM327 from Amazon which connected but wouldn't communicate with the app, I then bought a dongle from eBay and was sent a different one from the advert and it wouldn't even connect to the app so I messaged the vendor who sent me the Proscan as he thought it was the one I required. Happy days

Just spoke to the vendor for the dongle and he's going to list them at the weekend on eBay and once he does he'll let me know so if anyone wants one I'll post the link here tor you

      EDIT 4th June 2020...
The vendor still hasn't listed the dongle. I sent him a message last week and he hasn't answered...

      Lockdown boredom driving me insane...

Can't drive it so might as well give it a little bit of TLC

The underside of my 850 all looks the one colour and I am guessing it's went through a really muddy puddle or three at some point in time, so today I decided to start cleaning it up to assess what state it was in.

Happy to report it all looks rather splendid under there and once the Chemical Guys Bare Bones dries in it should look almost new

Bit more done today and please to say the only rust I found was the towbar.

I was going to take it off and paint it but with the thought of bolts snapping I decided to clean it up in situ

This must have been how the underside of the 850 looked when it left the factory

Sometimes it's the small jobs that gives the greatest pleasure...

I ordered a new headlamp wiper arm knowing fine well there was a pattern change and it may not fit into the outer cover. I tried the cover and sure enough the new arm was a different angle to the original so I had to strip all the parts from both arms and swap the new parts onto the original arm

I also repaired the split cover for the battery + terminal and refitted it

Finished cleaning the underside of the 850, the front subframe area was the most difficult part to remove the mud splashes from

Then cleaned the wheel arches, there seems to be some sort of underseal towards the inner reaches of the liners, does anyone know if this is how the 850 left the factory?

Then finished of by cleaning the tar off the sill covers and giving tham a polish

I still can't believe how original the car is. Before I bought it my mate told me not to touch it because it wasn't "an R" but I had a feeling it was something a little bit special and I'm too old to be worrying about speed

1st June was a big day for the 850 as I took it off of SORN (Statuary Off Road Notice) and taxed it for the first time since buying. The sun was shining and I went for a drive to check all was working as it should and more importantly the waterpump wasn't leaking. A few pictures taken when I was out...

      Well that's chucking filly...

When I tried my air-con I couldn't get the compressor to kick in. According to my paperwork the last time the air-con was serviced was in 2004 by the original owner. So today I took it to my local to have it checked over. They pulled 200g of gas out and recharged with 750g of R134a with some fresh oil and it never worked.

They noticed a broken wire at the compressor (I had seen this broken wire and thought it was a radio suppressor and decided to repair it at some point in time but it was still on my list) The mechanic repaired the wire and I now have freezing cold air-con. Shame the sun's gone now

I've driven 240 miles in the 850 this week and glad to report everything is perfect, air-con is icy cold and the engine temperature gauge sits bang in the middle. I checked the water level every time I was out expecting to have to top it up after giving it a full coolant flush but the level hasn't moved which means I've cured the leak at the waterpump so I can take out the can of coolant I've been lugging around. Happy days

I had a problem with the ride the day I had the new tyres fitted, the car felt wrong and there seemed to be a wheel balance problem, so a few weeks ago I started looking to see if I could find a worn suspension component. Turned out 'National Tyres' fitted two different sizes of tyres to the car. I ordered four of 205/50R16 and they fitted two that size and two 205/55R16. I also had them check the balancing and every single wheel needed re-balanced. I won't be buying tyres from them again...

Replacement front bumper arrived this evening. Stripped the bottom part off as I'll be using my own and gave the top a clean with paint thinners then a coat of MB Products Rubber Clenz which I did my back bumper with on Tuesday. Will give it another coat tomorrow once it's dry then I need to wait on new rivets arriving before I can fit it.

I also managed to get hold of an orange side repeater. The previous owner fitted two aftermarket clear ones and left the originals in the car but he must have broken one when removing it so I'll fit the orange ones tomorrow

Thanks for your kind words. It's not often you come across a 23 year old car that's as original as this one which in my eyes makes it worthy of preserving to in factory condition

I gave the front bumper a second coat this morning, willl leave to to soak in and dry then buff off the excess with a soft cloth to knock back the sheen to a more subtle finish

The reason I'm changing the front bumper is that it has been repainted badly with textured paint
The original owner's son told me when he sold the car last year there were a few bumps and marks on the front bumper which explains why it has been repaired. The chap who bought the 850 from the original family told them he was a Volvo enthusiast and he had been looking for an 850 for a while. It turns out he was a car dealer who was wanting to get a nice car to make a fat profit. Anyhow he had the front bumper repainted with textured paint in black and it looks awful and not in keeping with the car. I spoke to my paint guy and he said it would be almost impossible to replicate the original finish and to try and find another bumper

I also fitted the orange side repeaters this morning so another little job that makes all the difference

      I'm a happy bunny tonight

I contacted the Volvo dealership where I had ordered the rivets for my bumper and they said they should be with me tomorrow so I decided to swap over the bumpers this afternoon

I really can't believe the difference it's made to the front of the car, the original bumper had been painted with black textured paint (first picture below) and it looked terrible.
I had contemplated repainting it but the finish would never have been as original

An easy job following the Robert Spinner video (thanks Robert) and everything went back together nice and easy.

Just to decide how I want to mount the numberplate now and stick the pop rivets in when they arrive.

First picture is the textured paint

Fitted the numberplate onto a plinth and cut a couple of wedges to fit behind the plinth so that the plate sits vertically. Not sure if I'll keep the plinth as it sticks out at the ends more than I would have liked

The bumper pop rivets arrived this afternoon so I went out to the garage and fitted them, I was concerned the holes might have been drilled too large by the person who painted the bumper but the plastic covering on the rivets filled the hole nicely.

New green coolant cap was fitted for some preventative maintenance.

Next was the top torque mount which I have caught just before it splits and parts company from the outer shell. I used a hacksaw and cut the old mount out then used a couple of large sockets along with nut & bolt to press the new mount back into it's housing

Looks like I changed the top torque mount just in time

Made a start on the rear bumper brackets, then while I had the bumper off I decided to remove the towbar as I've no plans of towing with the 850

I used some C clamps and some chunks of scrap metal strategically stacked up. As you might imagine, it was an annoying process lol.

I've tried the C-clamp method before and it's not easy on your own unless you have 3 hands.

The jubilee clamp was only holding the socket and acting as a sleeve to prevent the torque mount from slipping off the side when the pressure was applied. The jubilee clamp did not grip the mount as the socket was slightly larger. I did try without the jubilee clamp but after a couple of failed attempts I came up with a plan...

Rear bumper back on and the lines of the car look much better without the droopy bumper and more so without the towbar

      Mission accomplished

I’ve finally finished my 850 and brought it back to a car that I’m sure Volvo would be happy to have in their showroom.

Well the Rubber Clenz never worked out. The car was outside when it rained last night and the bumpers were covered in water marks so today I stripped them back and applied GTechniq C4 which I know works
