      Another C70 newbie owner

Hello everybody here. I’d like to introduce myself in this part of the forum. Like the title says I bought my first C70 two months ago. However I’m not new to Volvos since I owned a ’98 S40 2.0T 5-Speed manual and currently own also a ‘07 S40 2.4i automatic.

I didn’t have time to make this post earlier but like they say: “better late than never!”

I’ve been looking for a manual P1 T5 for a while but had no luck. Looking for other options I came across with this clean title 2007 C70 T5 automatic with 97000 miles and a disassembled engine due a broken timing belt.

The previous owner attempted to fix it but he gave up after removing the cylinder head. After making sure all engine parts were in the car and a little negotiation, I closed the deal and headed home with my new project car.

Once I got home, I inspected the cylinder head and found the valve guides were still good, so I rebuilt the head, reassembled the engine, ran a full diagnostic with VIDA, before starting the engine, and it fired up in the first try with no errors!

      Here are some pictures:

And here is next to my S40

Congrats, welcome, and wow! I’m envious of guys like you who can tackle these projects.

Too bad you aren’t near me. There’s a guy who picked up a ‘10 S40R M66 that he thought his mechanic friend could fix but failed, so he’s trying to cut his losses. PO blew the head gasket so they planed the head, put in a new gasket/plugs/timing kit, but are now stuck with crank/no start. I checked it out and scanned it with my DiCE. Pretty sure they didn’t use a cam locking tool and the timing belt is just off a few teeth, but SWMBO won’t let me bring home another project.

      Enjoy that topless life!

      Thank you!

OMG! That guy has a unicorn. I hope he gets it running again. Like you said timing might be off most likely or maybe some sensors are not working properly. When assembling the engine the correct tools are a must.

I think the only reason he wants it to run is to sell at a better price. He’s just some rando who had no idea what he has. From my talk with him, I got the impression he thought he and his buddy could repair and flip it like a Honda on CL/fb and make a few bucks. Totally clueless about Volvos in general and P1s in particular.

If timing were different, I would have snagged it for the C70 AWD build MyNameIdeasWereTaken and I have been discussing. But I would rather use an auto for that - not right to put down a unicorn for no good reason.

100% agree. But I have to admit the idea of a AWD M66 C70 does not sound bad at all!

      I will!

Casually, yesterday I remembered about your AWD C70 thread while i was replacing the driver side engine mount and torque mount. I was looking at the extra threaded holes in the transaxle just where the passenger side axle connects to. And thought “maybe it’s for the AWD angle gear or something!”

Nice score! And nice job on the top end rebuild.
I wasn't so lucky when the timing belt tensioner failed on my old V70 T5 - bent every one of the exhaust valves. Keep us posted, especially if you do go down the AWD rabbit hole or even just a manual swap.

      Thank you!

Sorry to hear about your car failure. This is the Achilles heel of these engines.

I think 105000 or 120000 miles is too much for timing belt/tensioners service interval. And I haven’t found anywhere yet that says after how many years those parts have to be replaced.
I believe it has to be replaced every 75000 miles or 5 years tops, whichever comes first.

It sad that there’s a lot of cars being junked for this reason.

And of course if I do any mod, I’ll be sharing the details here!

Great story, great find! I’m no longer equipped for such projects, but enjoy hearing about the successes. Now only if there was a local with the gear, who felt like some neighborly projects....

      Welcome!

Welcome to the C-70 Owners group. I have a 2012 C-70 in Caspian Blue, light leather interior that we purchased via the Overseas Delivery Program (OSD) in Oct 2001. That was a really great trip and experience, and I highly recommend OSD if you ever purchase a new Volvo. I have a stage 1 tune from Shark performance on the C-70 and it significantly boosts the power and performance. It is custom tuned to my specific engine via VIN. I go to the Carlisle PA car shows a lot. Curious: where was the picture of the car on the carrier taken? Have a good day.

Welcome to the club. Very nice find. You have a 2.5 AW55 Same power plant as the 04-07 R. 218hp. This car is prime for a build. Pick up the FCP front strut bar now. Inexpensive upgrade that is stock for that car. You will see a huge difference.

Thank you, I plan to get the strut bar soon.

Also, while putting the engine back together, I was wondering if i would see a performance increase using a 2.4i intake camshaft. But decided to go with the stock cam and make sure the engine runs well before doing any mod.

Thanks, good luck, and enjoy the C-70. The year we went to Sweden via OSD was 2011.
