      Shift knob replacement

Seeing p.rico shifter retrofit pop up reminds me that I need to swap out my shifter, no clue what the PO did to it, but it has a bunch of weird and annoying scratches all over it. What I am not sure though, and something that may determine how soon I want to try and swap it out, is can the shift knob be replaced without dismantling the entire center console?

While it comes apart fairly easily, it's a lot of work to simply replace a shift knob. If I need to remove it, then I might go ahead and replace things like the little rubber flaps in the cupholders at the same time (mine are fine, but if I am taking the console apart I may as well refresh those since the majority of the work is done).

      Thanks.

I'd bet those are actually hairline cracks - this is a known issue with the knob and mine was the same when I bought my S60. I had the selling dealership replace it under warranty. My new one is now starting to develop a crack, too.

Same here for my new to me XC70. You can get just the replacement knob for around $120 and replace it yourself. I saw instructions somewhere and it didn't look too tough.

I bet you guys are right, they are cracks, makes sense given the directions of them. I'll see if I can find the instructions to swap it out, although if it will just eventually crack anyway I might not be in that much of a hurry. $120 for a shifter knob, that's a set of IPD front and rear HD end links, I don't know that I need end links, just looking at things that cost a similar amount

I have a 2017 S60i which I have had for 2 yrs and no cracking yet. Does the cracking start on earlier model yrs only? I was concerned because my old S70 GLT had that problem all the time.

I’d just wet sand it first and see how it turns out. I have the cracks as well, and as they seem superficial to the top layer only at this point I figured I’d wet sand it first to see how it turns out. Worse case scenario would be wrapping that area with a vinyl.

Check Nickshu's post. He did it without taking it apart fully. He took off the top portion and worked the tabs from the inside of the knob.

I have it in my thread of getting the knob out only (in the DIY thread in the stickies), but I did it the "hard" way of taking the dash out. It takes all of 30 minutes to do the whole job though...
