      What oil weight?

2006 xc70- 100K...been using Mobil One...Its now approaching summer in NY....what viscosity M-1 do I use? The local stores have only 5-30, 10-30. There is also this HIGH Milage M-1. I want this machine to last...it's not using any oil at this point...changing oil/filter every 3-5K.

      What oil weight?

      The ‘06 XC70 takes 5W-30. I’d stick to synthetic.

I've been running the Euro spec synthetic 0W-40 in NY. 5W-30 works too. Just stick to synthetic.

I've always used 10w30 M-1. The oil spec from the owner's manual is on page 159 below:

At work we run Delo 15w40 in all the turbo cars. Some of the cars that had their oil changed every 3k with the 15w40 have made it past 300k, without a turbo replacement! Personally I run Mobil 1 15w50 in my T5, I like the extra zinc it has.

0W40 meets all the temperature and viscosity requirements for turbo RN engines (your xc) in North American climates. M1's specific 0w40 meets euro A5/B5 full ester synthetic and mercedes 229.5 oil spec as well as BMW LongLife 1 spec.

Back when all the T5 and R guys were looking for better synthetic options a blackstone labs oil analysis was run on both a R oil sample of M1 and Castrol euro 0w40 after 5000 miles. The results were effectively identical. 98.9% of as new lubrication properties remaining and very low wear metal content. Blackstone suggested we try 10k intervals. Im not going to suggest that long of an interval but certainly dont hesitate to switch to this weight as a Mobil 1 product. Im running it in my moms and sisters RN engine'd volvos (2.4T and T5) and havent had a single issue in 3 years.

Volvo recommends 5W-30 synthetic with the ACEA A5/B5 rating year round. I have used that in all my Volvos, the longest in use was a MY02 S80 T6 with 130K trouble free miles from new, and no oil consumption or turbo issues.

I have been running 5w-30 full synth in my T5 for over 10 years and 70k miles (91K when I bought it) in the desert and now in FL. No complaints, no engine issues. No sludge or PCV clogs with changes every 5K (I had the PCV done in 2016 or 2017 and my mech said it didn't need to be done - but that was in the desert, so low humidity 10 months out of the year - YMMV) I make sure my turbo gets regular exercise after being appropriately warmed up and with a good 1-mi cooldown minimum and I am still not losing any more oil between changes than what normally ends up in the intake from natural lubrication transfer of the turbines.
OP, I think the 3 biggest factors will be past history-->current engine condition, your driving habits (city vs continuous highway without stops, pedal travel, etc) and oil change interval. IF I can run 5/30 in the dead of summer at 112F with no real degradation, I don't see a reason to use 10W or 15W up there unless you have low compression.

Where is this? I have used Mobil 1 A5/B5 in my '09 3.2, but I'm a little concerned because the manual says A1-B1, and oilspecs.org says:

ACEA A5/B5 Stable, stay-in-grade Engine Oil intended for use at extended Drain Intervals in Passenger Car & Light Duty Van Gasoline & Diesel Engines designed to be capable of using Low Viscosity Oils with HTHS Viscosity of 2.9 to 3.5 mPa*s. These Oils are unsuitable for use in certain Engines - consult vehicle-OEM’s owner’s manual/handbook in case of doubt.

I would like to use the A5/B5, just because the wife's '13 S60 T5 specs it and I really don't want to inventory different oils. Has Volvo actually issued a Tech Pub on this?
