      Sensus Update 06/04/2020

There is a update noted on the UK's website:

      https://www.volvocars.com/uk/support...ftware-updates

Updates from and including June 2020
      Infotainment:
Sensus navigation is stopped when a route is started via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Previously, only the route was paused. The "Cancel" button will no longer be visible.
The last destination for a completed route will be selectable in the list of previous destinations. Previously, this was not selectable (greyed out).
Applies to US/Canada: The Connected Safety function will be available.
Applies to XC40 Twin Engine: When driving in the B-mode, the batteries will be additionally charged, which provides slightly increased engine braking.

Looks like the US and Canada are getting Connected Safety.

The Connected Safety function can inform the driver whether another vehicle further ahead on the same road has activated its hazard warning flashers or detected slippery driving conditions. Information about slippery driving conditions can also be provided if your own car detects slippery surfaces.

Connected Safety can communicate information between your own car and other vehicles via the Internet. The function is intended to make a driver aware that there may be a potentially dangerous traffic situation further ahead on the same road.

Connected Safety can handle the following:

      Alarm on hazard warning flashers
      Alarm on slippery driving conditions
The system can alert the driver if slippery driving conditions are detected. Drivers of other vehicles with Connected Safety activated can also be notified of the slippery driving conditions via an Internet connection.

In vehicles equipped with head-up display, the warning symbols for Connected Safety are also shown there.

      Note
Connected Safety communication between vehicles only works for the vehicles equipped with the Connected Safety function and have it activated.

      Alarm on hazard warning flashers
If your car's hazard warning flashers are activated, information on this can be sent to vehicles approaching your car's own position.

      17w06 - P5 - Support site - Connected Safety - Warning indicators alarm
When your own car approaches a vehicle with its hazard warning flashers activated and it has received information about this vehicle, this symbol is displayed in the instrument panel.

When your own car is close to a vehicle with flashing hazard warning flashers, the symbol doubles in size.

      Alarm on slippery driving conditions
If your own car detects reduced friction between your tyres and the road, information on this can be sent to vehicles approaching your own car's position.

      17w06 - P5 - Support site - Connected Safety - Slippery road warning symbol
If a slippery conditions alarm is triggered, this symbol is displayed in the instrument panel Ė both in your own car and in approaching vehicles with Connected Safety activated which have received the information and are approaching the slippery area.

When the approaching vehicle is close to the slippery section of road, the symbol doubles in size on the vehicle's instrument panel.

      Activate/deactivate Connected Safety
The function can be activated in two ways:

      17w06 - P5 - Support site - Connected Safety Button
Shift between On/Off using this button in the centre display's function view.

Or select SettingsMy CarIntelliSafe in the centre display's top view.

When the function is activated, the following message is shown:

This function requires an internet connection and your mobile phone subscription will be charged for data traffic

      Then select Connected Safety.

For Connected Safety to be able to communicate with other vehicles, the message must then be answered with the Accept option.

If there is no Internet connection, the system can still inform the driver that slippery driving conditions have been detected by your own car.

The car needs to be connected to the Internet to be able to use most functions in Connected Safety; see Connect to the Internet via your mobile phone (WiFi), or Connect to the internet via Bluetooth connected phone.

      Limitations of Connected Safety
Information about vehicles with activated hazard warning flashers or which have detected slippery driving conditions is not always communicated between all vehicles within the same area.

This can be because for example:

Poor or no contact with the Internet.
Vehicles on slippery surfaces make manoeuvres that are too weak for friction between tyres and road surface to be detectable, e.g. steering wheel movement, acceleration or braking.
Vehicles that have detected slippery surfaces, or have activated their hazard warning flashers, do not have the function activated.
Vehicles that have detected slippery surfaces, or have activated their hazard warning flashers, are not equipped with the function.
There may be no warning due to missing or defective global positioning/satellite navigation.
Detection of slippery surfaces or activation of hazard warning flashers has taken place on a minor road which is missing in Volvo Cars database.
Connected Safety is not available in all markets and does not cover all areas - a dealer for Volvo has information on current areas.
      Warning
The Connected Safety function is supplementary driver support intended to facilitate driving and make it safer Ė it cannot handle all situations in all traffic, weather and road conditions.
In certain situations, the function may give incorrect warnings for slippery driving conditions.
The function cannot always detect other vehicles with activated hazard warning flashers or detect all sections of road with slippery surfaces.
Connected Safety is not a substitute for the driver's attention and judgement. The driver is always responsible for ensuring the car is driven in a safe manner, at the appropriate speed, with an appropriate distance to other vehicles, and in accordance with current traffic rules and regulations.

Dealer only. Should be free with a factory scheduled maintenance.

Just to level set with everyone before this becomes a whole "how do I know I have the update!?!?!" kind of thread...

You will only see active safety notifications, IF, other Volvo cars also have the software. So, over time, more of the cars will be connected via active safety as updates are performed. Second, you need to have the vehicle modem ENABLED. There is no additional charge or data plan required.

As I have tested, vehicle A is pulled over and has hazard lights on. Vehicle B is coming up on vehicle A and then in the dash you will see an icon (think like the ABS or Start/Stop Icon....) letting you know they are there.
Any comments made are of my own opinion and not that of my employer!

So anyone in the US actually get this update via Vida (or the dealer) yet?

I don't want to pay for a 3 day subscription if it is not there yet.

Not excited. The only warning I'm interested in is "Speed Trap Ahead!"

There's absolutely nothing I'm going to be able to do for someone at 5am when the situation is in a city 5 hours away. It's a ridiculous system.
Those big LED signs at the side of the road are a much better idea.

You should complain to your cellphone service provider. The alerts are supposed to be local in nature.
There may be a few alerts that are cast on a wider area but those are rare.

FYI, you don't need location services enabled: your location is approximated using the tower where your phone is "pinging".

      Thumbs down

Well, that was a waste of over $100. The Total Update in Vida as of today, June 27 does not include Connected Safety, at least here in the US.

How do I know? This menu does not appear:

      To Activate/deactivate Connected Safety:
      * Select Settings ==> My Car ==> IntelliSafe in the centre display's top view.
      * Then select Connected Safety. (Not present with my freshly updated US XC90)
      * For Connected Safety to be able to communicate with other vehicles, the message must then be answered with the Accept option.

So don't waste your time and Money if you are specifically looking for this!
