      2nd year service

I just got my 2nd year service done. I brought the car in for inspection, 2nd year service, and vibration when braking. They called me back and said the front rotors needs to be replaced and rear brake pads are at 2mm. I was not happy since I only have 21,500 miles. My X5 was able to go 37K miles before replacing the pads.

The SA said that they will replace the front rotors for free if I agree to replacing the rear brake pads. The front rotors should be replaced for free under warranty because of the vibration when braking. If I didn't do the rear pads, they wouldn't replace my front rotors? Not sure why he said that. It was unexpected.

I did do a search here and noticed that it's common for the rear brake pads to be replaced early due to the size of the rear brakes and the size of the car. This is the first time I had to have brake pads replaced this early.

The rotors should be replaced whether you buy the rear brakes or not.

I wonder if I should contact Volvo regarding the rear brakes.

Not sure what that would accomplish. It's a wear item. They are worn out.

So it is pretty common for the rears to wear out this quickly on the XC90? Just wanted to confirm.

Yep. I've seen them worn out anywhere from about 14k miles up to 40k. Depends on the driving. Turn off Autohold and that will help.

Also what contributes to the rears wearing faster is that Volvo uses the rear brakes to reduce the tendency for the front of the car to dive when you brake to a stop. I really think that is a great feature to have the car feel so stable when braking. If you have ever watched car magazines test braking system some of the vehicles dive so hard with the rear end almost lifting off the ground. As tech points out it is a wear item. Every car is different and it can be an oranges and applies comparison. But, the dealership is replacing the front rotors. Those normally cost $100 plus just for parts.

The rear pads are also half the size of the front pads. Itís amazing the difference in comparison. I got about 40k out of my rears. If and when a big brake kit comes out for the rear Iím going for it.

The front brake pad area is just massive. Iím on my original set and Iíve got 113k.
