      Hattrickís Sonic VR

This is not my first Volvo. Itís not my first P2R and not even my first blue Volvo wagon. But this car is very special.
My son Jake and I recently completed a build on his 854 Platinum (although project cars are never done). Featuring a B5254T4 engine swap with COP and dual VVT control, M56, R brakes and coilovers, this car is an absolute blast to drive....but itís his car and I donít get a chance to drive it very often.
Check out the build thread here: https://forums.swedespeed.com/showth...ject-aka-S850R
My current daily driver is a Ď17 VW GTI. Itís an incredible machine that is powerful, handles like a slot car, and gets 35 mpg. But it doesnít have the sound of a 5 cylinder or the character of an older Volvo. I was thinking of finding another nice P80 to build but knew it had to be a wagon. The P2 VRs were intriguing as well but seemed to be few and far between to find.
A few weeks ago the state of Michigan started to lift some of the covid restrictions and I took Jakes Platinum to a local Cars & Coffee as he was out of town. I was talking with a fellow Volvo enthusiast (who happens to own a Flashacama S60R and V70R!). He mentioned that he recently picked up a Sonic V70R but wanted to sell it to fund a 855 project he was planning. Sonic Blue seemed a little flashy for me but once I saw it I fell in love. Iím now the proud owner of a Sonic VR.

Me stopping for gas on the way home.

      Another car to the fleet!

      Welcome to the Sonic club!

I see the VR already has a FMIC. Any other performance goodies?

I havenít had a chance to look it over thoroughly yet but was told it has a FMIC, a Forge CBV, a down-pipe (not sure what brand), IPD sway bars, a IPD boost gauge, and OZ Ultraleggera wheels. Itís kind of funny that it has all of this but still has the stock exhaust. This is something I want to change. Any suggestions?

And thanks for the nice comments!

None from me. My car has a Snabb FMIC, Snabb downpipe, and factory exhaust from the DP back. I like it.

IPD sounds great when you're on it, but drones SO MUCH on the highway. Having tried it on my SR, I would never install one on a VR.

My eventual plan, if I replace the factory one on the VR, would be EST Touring.

I just installed the IPD exhaust on my VR to go with my IPD downpipe. It sounds amazing outside, but the drone does suck. Iím hoping some serious sound dampening inside will help, because I really want it to work. It just sounds so unique, Iíve already had several props given after just a couple of days.

+1 est touring, no drone sounds good to me. The videos I've seen of it sound pretty good too

Going through three different exhaust setups, TME is by FAR my favorite. Quiet on the highway but sounds just right when you get on it.

The VR cabin can add to the drone from what I read.

EST is having issues getting their catback in Canada/US. They donít get through customs and get shipped back to Europe. Could be a while before they get them.

IPD, Custom made, Straight pipe and oem with the res delete. Honestly oem with the res delete is probably the second best to the tme.

I've done sound dampening with MLV on the whole car with the IPD exhaust + DP, it helps quite a bit, but it doesn't disappear completely. The exhaust noise is still there, but more muffled.

In the end it really depends per person on what is too loud and what's not...

Yes, mine cost $45,000 but it came with a free car.

So really what does an aftermarket cat-back system do for the car? I have read there's no performance increase, so it's just louder / different tone?

      LOL!
I do think they're more free/less restrictive as long as you combine with a DP.

For a new one, yes wayyy too much. Paid 300 for my used oem DP, an that was just with low miles but so worth it at the time. Still keep it in the basement as a back up.

Seriously though, I just picked up a new one. Still needs to get painted. My first purchase for the car. That along with a couple R key backs. Itís a little frivolous...but then again so is a bright blue 300 hp station wagon.

My first Volvo also happened to be a blue wagon. It was a Ď87 745 turbo/M46 with electric overdrive. The Galaxy wheels have a nice lip and are still my favorite wheel for a rwd Volvo. It was 1994. My wife and I had been married for about a year and had recently purchased our first house. I remember my wife thinking it was strange driving a Volvo wagon when we didnít have any kids. It wasnít strange for long as a year later Jake was born. We owned the car until the fall of 1998 when my wife became pregnant with triplets! (Thus the nickname ďHattrickĒ). Needing something bigger, we sold the 740 wagon and bought a Chevy Suburban.

I started working at a Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Volkswagen dealership in 1989. I was just out of college and needed work. I decided to work at the dealership until I could find a real job. The 745 was a trade-in at the time.
31 years later Iím still at the dealership.

I run the EST sport with a 8fab downpipe. Sounds amazing no drone. I would recommend the sport.

Love that story and that 745. I'm going the other way. I started in 2009 with a 2006 S60R. In 2015, we had our first kid and sort of unrelated, I bought the V70R. I bought the XC90 in 2016 for my wife to haul around the kid. A year later we had twins, so the XC90 became the family cruiser with three across car seats. I sold the S60R in 2017 and fully committed to the wagon life. Added the 745 in 2018, the 06 XC70 in 2019, and the 07 XC70 in 2020.

Having twins is craziness. I can't imagine triplets!

I got some sound deadening mat off amazon, worked like a charm. I have an SR though. You might want to get some thicker stuff, I got the 50mm Kilmat.

Yep, I have used quite a bit in the past. I think the key with this one is to actually use both a butyl-based material for vibration dampening, but also a foam-based one for sound. People often wonder why their cars still have a lot of road noise after spending hundreds on Dynamat (which is butyl-based).

In the end it really depends per person on what is too loud and what's not...
Wow! Looks like you did it the right way too. I'm ok with some sound (it's why I installed an exhaust after all). Seems like I'll be a lot happier after doing this. Hope it comes out half as well as yours!

I was leaning toward the IPD based on the videos Iíve watched/heard, but now Iím not so sure. Iím curious if the sound dampening will help with the drone. Please let me know.

[QUOTE=Phoenix R;7605989]Yes, mine cost $45,000 but it came with a free car.

Original owner?!! Thatís awesome! And a M66? You must have one of the rarest VRs around!
Mine had 2 owners (3 if you count the guy who flipped it to me). It spent all but the last 6 months in Utah.
I found the original window sticker in the glove box.

      Yep. $46k+
