      ESSR Message won't go away...

Engine Service System Required message will not go away. I tried the reset procedure multiple times (key position 1, hold trip button, position two, blink then release, hear tone).

      Why might this be?

First, that isn't the reset procedure. That's for the service light. You have a fault that needs to be diagnosed and repaired. You need the codes read to have a clue where to start.

      Gochya, thank you for clarifying.

What does the service light look like? (The one that can be reset with the mentioned in the original post.)

There is the ! light in the center of the dash, most important. It can change (red, yellow and can flash) according to the severity of the problem, will also give a message in the info display.

"Check Engine" is what you have? Most likely an emissions fault that needs a code reader to check it. Last one I had was faulty throttle, I have a cheapy code reader from Harbor.

Orange ! light is on, and the message reads "Engine System Service Required".

This message can be accompanied by a CEL (Check Engine Light) or come up by itself. I got it once when my MAF was acting up and never got a CEL, but as stated, it could be a bunch of different things. You'll need to codes pulled from here.

The service light is exactly the same (Orange ! light, plus a message that I forget exactly what it says "Time for regular maintenance" or something similar), and is reset with the procedure you've done.
