Going to be changing the oil in the rear axle/diff of a 2013 XC90 D5.
This video seems to explain how to do it pretty well:
But I am pretty sure I need to remove a certain amount of oil once I've filled it so it comes out of the drain hole, but I cannot find this procedure in VIDA.
PS I will be doing a mini flush by putting new oil in the diff, swirling it around so it mixes with any old oil I couldn't remove and then repeating this process until the oil comes out clean.
Does anyone know how much needs to be extracted once it's filled up?
I just bought a case of Amsoil Severe Gear 75W-90. Going to do the whole fleet's angle gears and rear diffs.
Also going to do the 300's diff, a family member's AWD Rogue and SH-AWD RDX. The SH-AWD unit in the RDX what's basically ATF in its rear diff interestingly!
@dyun1dyun1 Where can I double check the fluid amount, I couldn't find any info in VIDA ( it may be there but I cannot find it! ) ?
I saw his video and it's great, but it doesn't show how much fluid to remove after filling.
Sorry for the silly question but what does TJ mean?
@generic_volvo_driver
Thanks for the link, I found some of the same type here in the UK on eBay.
Also when you say you didn't get a good seal, did you notice it leaking after driving for a while?
I didnt get a good seal on my XC90 with just a new OEM washer. I added some cheap thickness Teflon tape (not the good stuff) and the plug sealed properly.
I simply brimmed both the rear diff and transfer case with Genuine Volvo fluid. Genuine fluid is now a synthetic gear lube and prices out roughly the same as anything else.
Only for the Haldex did I bother to suck anything out.
do you guys do any maintenance on shaft ends at all? the bit that goes into haldex unit i think there's a bearing there as well?
