I got a cargo box recently and decided I’m going on a trip. My 3 kids and wife were hesitant But I decided to go about it anyway. We started 7/24. To get ready I’ve been preparing my xc90. We have 7 people going to I packed enough clothes to do laundry every 5 days. I located all these additional compartments in the xc to strategically place tools and dry foods. I packed 30 pack of ramen noodles and a small rice cooker in events we are in locations where finding food would be hard. Each row I place reusable garbage bags. Each seat got their own micro fiber cloth that we could wash at night and air dry. Each seat has their own hand sanitizers and 100 disposable face masks. I installed a lock box for safety storage. I brought a power inverter just in case we need 120 power.

The day before going I checked the car over and tried to update the maps and failed horribly. Gary from here tried but we failed. As backup I downloaded all the areas that we are going in the mountains just in case since I’m stuck without car nav now.

The game plan was leave Nola, head to Dallas. Then wachita falls, Pueblo, pikes peak , Denver, rapid city, mt Rushmore, devils tower , rexboug, grand Teton, Yellowstone, butte, glacier national park, Bismarck, Minneapolis, St. Louis, Evansville, Birmingham, Nola. Roughly 18 days. Along the way I decided to audible and also stop royal gorge. I’m expecting other mini stops.

We get to Dallas and My TPMS comes on. A plug I put is leaking. We get to Oklahoma and I lose cell signal and we lost nav. It sucked so I decided when we got to Pueblo to call a local dealer. McDonald Volvo took me in the next day at 7:30. They told me my tire can’t be patched. Sucks cause I bought 4 new tires are waiting at home. I decided I might as well get it done. Then it took them 7 hrs but they got our nav working. We are 1400 miles into a 6000 mile drive. Wishing for the best. My car was and osd. It was awesome driving it to several countries in Europe and now we embark for 21 states here. I’ll update this thread. My kids are young and one day they will book at this trip and realize how epic it truly was to spend this much time in a car with family seeing the Midwest.

So cool and I from the looks of it you've got some wonderful destinations planned! When at Glacier make sure to drive Going to the Sun Road and complete the loop with the small road on the outskirts (forgot the name). At Theodore Roosevelt check with the ranges in case they are still offering (they did pre COVID-19) the nighttime astronomy program. They bring out one of their telescopes (12" reflective) and we enjoyed seeing Saturn's rings for the first time. Great view of Perseids Meteor shower too given the great stargazing rating at the park. While at Mt. Rushmore, plan on Custer State Park and if you can swing it plan a visit to Badlands including a drive through at dusk - out of this world experience!

I hope you get into an enjoyable routine without any more hiccups. Have fun, stay safe and post some of fun XC90 pics at the great sites you'll experience!

That’s good info. I brought my tripod with spotting scope. I’ve been to North Dakota before the sky is amazing at night. Can’t wait to share with my kids.

My buddy just got back from gnp. They. It allowing the loop because the Indian reservation isn’t allowing people over that side. 😞. My dad is 82 and mom is 72 with a bad hip so they love seeing everything from
The car. The PA system has done really well.

Tomorrow we head to Rushmore. Here are some pics from royal gorge pikes peak and Denver.

Looking forward to follow up posts! That sounds like an epic trip - what's the age range of the kids? You have a lot of great places on your list, hope it's smooth sailing from here on out.

As an aside I'm new to the forum after buying a used 2019 xc90 that I drove from Denver back home to Spokane a few weeks ago. Anyone know why I can't see the attached pictures?

Keep it coming @Sidwin. Reading threads like this is the best I can currently do with the lockdown. That and planning theoretical trips on Google Maps.

After (quite-literally) cross-country'ing with my Cross Country for the past couple of years, I've been pretty much holed up for the past 3-4 months and the itch for another cross-country drive is unimaginable!

Sounds like a nice trip. I carried a full size spare in addition to the small donut the last time I took a 5 day 2500 mile road trip. But that was with only 4 passengers.

      Stay safe; looks fun.

Also while at Roosevelt make sure to drive through the Prairie Dog Town. It's really cool! Kids will love it and get out to walk. If you're lucky you'll see badgers looking for a meal and the dogs networking to avoid it. Enjoy it and take it easy.

I stopped over to Nebraska so kids can claim that state. Then we went to Rushmore and about 140 miles left I see some dark clouds and one is beginning to spiral. I’m like [email protected]@“@)(;;!!&@. No cell signal I can’t pull up the weather. Thank god the Volvo nav is working cause Apple map crashed and wouldn’t pull up the cache map. Living in Nola I’m used to driving through heavy rain. Lightning is striking off in the distant both ahead and on the side of us. I’m counting how many seconds before I hear the thunder. There is no place to take shelter so u got to drive. The road is flooded but the car seems to do really well. I’m thanking god I bought that new tire yesterday. I see cars pulled over but I’m thinking with this downpour that would be bad. Then the hail comes. I hear it hitting the car but it isn’t that large. I drive a little faster to get ahead of it. I can see I’m on the edge of the storm. And soon I’ll be turning East to get away from it. Longest 15 miles. The car traction control is working miracles. I was worried about 18 wheelers coming from opposite direction but the car handled fine. I could feel a little hydroplaning but the awd was doing its job too. We finally get through it and i took a picture. We made it through a tornado and hail storm. Car didn’t take much of a beating.

We then head to mt Rushmore. 15min later it starts pouring. Tomorrow devils tower and start heading west to the grand Tetons. We end up in rapid city during bike week at sturgis. lol odds of that.

@Sidwin, You are covering a lot of sights and territory in a short amount of time. I need to do the straight west trip so it will be great to hear your stories. Our trip to Phoenix and San Diego was awesome - loved the back country of Colorado.

Nice trip! I always download offline maps in google map app if the place might not have cell signals. Keeping kids entertained in long hours driving is not easy.

I had the maps downloaded for the mountains but in rural areas where the population of some towns are 10 people. Yes 10 people. the cell signal was too bad. Apple map crashed and restarting the map failed. I didn’t think about that and to be honest on such a huge drive I would highly recommend backup system. We lost signal in black hills today.

So woke up and packed up. Headed to devils tower. This is my second trip there so I decided to take the road less travel. We stopped at buffalo jump and then traveled along the black hills till we got to devils tower. Got some ice cream and back in the car to riverton Wyoming. Drove along the sand creek massacre trail. Pretty sad what was done to those Indian tribes. We found this gem along the way. Hell half acre. It looks like a small Yellowstone Grand Canyon. Tomorrow we head to grand Teton and spend the night in Idaho. Nice quiet drive for the most part. TPMS came on said all four tires were low but I checked and it wasn’t so I reset.

I thought that thing was just a prop in Close Encounters...

As for a map for road trips, yes, it is a good idea to have more than 1 offline map backups.

Pretty cool u were able to identify it right off the bat.

One stupid thing, if u enable a nav with sensus and then plug in your iPhone that has waze running, Apple play and sensus will cancel each other and then u have no active nav session. I tried it twice and same thing happen. I like to keep waze going on the car. While I look at sensus on the steering wheel display since waze doesn’t appear there. Let’s me keep my eyes on the road. I also like to have my iPhone running Apple Maps with it zoomed all the way out so I can get my bearings straight. I like using the steering wheel to see the curve in the road ahead of time to anticipate. Pilot assist has been very awesome. I let it drive 80% of the time. Tomorrow grand Tetons I can’t wait.

Well, I didn't know it was real, as the profile looked very artificial when it appeared in the movie. So I guess it is quite unique.

Odd. Maybe that's a s/w version thing. The last time I tried Sensus and phone map guidance at the same time was in an Android phone, and it was probably google maps instead of Waze. I recall the phone's navigation taking over in a portion of the screen, but I thought the "speedometer/tachometer" display in front of the steering wheel still displayed Sensus' guidance. Either way, since the car's audio called out the phone's directions, and Sensus and the phone don't necessary have completely identical instructions, I thought it was confusing enough not to do that again. But that was many road trips ago, so my recollection may not be 100% accurate.

I agree about Pilot Assist being very useful if one knows what to expect of it. I recently took a small (2 hr each way) road trip in an analog car, and while fun, it does require more energy to even drive long simple freeway stretches.

Strange about Waze and Sensus Nav. In my case Sensus Nav goes silent if I switch to Maps or vice versa. Although come to think of it I don't think I've tried having both running (iPhone unplugged) and then connecting it. I would like to think Nav stays running - vaguely recall that happening but I'll have to try it and report back.

You can only use one actived navigation at a time, either Sensus Nav or a Carplay Nav App like Google Maps, Waze, or Apple Maps. I think you can still view Sensus map while minimize Carplay App on Sensus which still guides u with voice. If your are using Sensus Nav, When you plug in the phone with an activated carplay nav app, it will show a message Sensus nav is disabled. For the offline navigation, there's an app call Sygic GPS. (I think it's TomTom phone App version GPS) you need to pay for premium service, but it has a week free trial and it's free for basic services. You can download each state's map in that app. I use Waze in the city which has more accurate information regarding traffics and speed camera locations, etc. For trips outside the city, I downloaded google maps offline which is handy when entering rural areas without cell signal.

No I wish. I ordered canon r5 that hasn’t shipped and I traded in my eos r so I borrowed my son’s rebel t4.

So today’s update is we get up early and head to grand Teton. I can’t believe I waited so long to go here. Breath taking to say the least. We drove from shoshoni which is awesome cause Indian reservation don’t charge federal taxes on gas 🙂. The way there u cross the wind river so many times. It looks like u are driving down the Grand Canyon. Then we started to climb into the grand Tetons. I took the xc90 on a trail I to the woods. The has signs for bears. The car did awesome. Then we get to the top of the bridger Teton when an 18 wheeler coming in the opposite lane throws up a rock and cracks my windshield. I was bummed. We went through the grand Tetons and stopped everywhere for pictures and just soaking it in. Then we headed to Idaho for our hotel. Tomorrow Montana and we will enter west Yellowstone. 2517 miles into this trip and my poor car has already had to get nav reflashed, new rear tire and now new windshield and this doesn’t include driving through a hail storm next to a tornado. Hopefully the dealership with cover the rotors. They are vibrating again. The resurfaced them last year.

When I was driving through the storm all I could think about was my 6 passengers and getting us out safely. I said regardless what happens to this car, my family is the most important. I thought of all the other cars I could have owned and the #1 thing that sold me on the xc90 was the safety stats I read.

We are almost at the half way mark of this epic journey and I’m very proud of this car and how far we’ve come. I hope you guys enjoy the pics and my writing 🙂

That's unfortunate for the windshield crack. But all in all, looks like a good trip.

I was worried about your windshield. If you were able to get it fixed with the filler (assume it's smaller than a nickel) then you're probably fine - won't be needing to replace it. Insurance would only replace it if it's more than quarter sized damage. Exciting journey. Your rock impact reminds me of when we were driving back from NWT and a RCMP Ford Exploder came around a curve flying with lights flashing and kicked a big stone. It hit precisely where I had already had a chip fixed on our 2010's windshield. Thankfully it held up well to the impact and hasn't even needed a follow up touchup. It's been a few years now without consequence.

@Sidwin, thanks for all of the pics.

Off-topic: I am only able to view some of your pictures on my iPhone X. In TapaTalk, I see kind of a broken photo frame icon. Is that an iPhone issue (for me) or an upload issue?

Stay safe and enjoy it all.

Maybe a TapaTalk issue in iPhone - images are coming through great in Safari on my Mac - and I can tell he's uploading and attaching the images to Swedespeed. What I'm curious about is how Sid's been able to attach pics directly into Swedespeed (perhaps TapaTalk?). I've not been able to attache via my Mac lately and have gone back to embedding pics using links from OneDrive.

This road trip definitely has had more car drama that I’m used to but to be honest the memories have outweighed the drama and things could always be worse. When I was sitting in Denver waiting for the nav to be fixed it was 5:45 when they gave me back the car and they closed at 6pm. I was beginning to get sick thinking about losing yet another day over nav. Or when I was driving. Through that Midwest storm thinking can I stay in the edge of the storm and make it out before the grunt of it passes me. You can only prepare for so much. The clear bra has been awesome. I pull into gas stations and use the window cleaner to scrub the bugs off the clear bra lol.

I spoke too soon. Pulled in gas station to clean off windshield and bugs off clear bra and now the crack has spreader to the edge of the glass. The crack is low enough. Trying to multitask I dropped my wife and kids off to take photos around Jackson hole while I drove to Napa to get a couple of windshield repair kits. I added the resin and drove back to pick them up while it was curing.

Since the clear PPF can take a bit of abuse, it may be interesting to see how much you accumulate from the entire road trip. I cleaned the front end every 2 days or so in my last road trip. I may just leave it alone for the entire trip next time..

I'm on TapATalk Android and only see maybe a third of the posted photos. I've attached what I see of most of your photos.
Glad you're posting and sharing so the rest of us (like our family) can live vicariously through you! Be safe.

Wish no more drama the rest of trip. My windshield was cracked on commute, the only one in 20 years. So the windshield maybe is not as strong as my other cars though nobody did direct test.
Travel in wild west is sometimes challenge as city/town is so sparse. Maybe take some precaution and pump up tire pressure in morning to make sure they are all good. This could reduce some risk.

Yellowstone was awesome. But when we first got there the windshield started cracking more. Oh well. I tried my best. We did Yellowstone counter clockwise to avoid traffic. We stopped at a bunch of places to take pics and saw a lot of bison.

With the windows down and outside temps being 78 the car said it was turning the ac on for the internal systems. Never seen that message before.

After hitting old faithful and the springs we head to butte Montana. So glad nav is working. Google worked ok in offline but stock nav can pull up POI which was helpful since I didn’t have addresses for a lot of the locations.

We start heading to butte and omg is the scenery there is what they consider big sky. It is nothing short it beautiful. But as a dad I’m always worried about being out in the country when it gets dark due to animals crossing. About an hr before butte I’m looking at the Weather radar and I see a bad spot. I’m comparing the gps map and I’m thinking I’m going to hit this storm. I’m doing the math trying to decide should we wait it out in a gas station but I’m thinking I can hit the edge of the storm. We turn right and then 5 min later it is beginning to rain. Hard rain. My mom says I think it’s hailing. I said no mom it isn’t. I’m scanning where I can pull in. Maybe a gas station but there isn’t one. I decided to hit the gas cause I can see clear skies ahead of me. By this point it is hailing but once again it isn’t that large. Maybe because we are at 6500 ft above sea level. 5 min later I’m clearing the storm. We hit I-90 and the rest is history.

Forgot to mention I saw another brand new xc90. They walked up and saw the red osd plate then walked behind and saw Louisiana plates and was amazed my parents told me. I was busy talking to the park ranger.

Tomorrow we head to glacier national park. Then our car will finally turn south. This car has been home for us for over a week. 3200 miles. We are half way. Praying nothing bad happens but prepared if it does.

383 miles since our last episode. A total of 3517 since we were home. Got up and drove from butte Montana to glacier national park. I discovered that auto pilot doesn’t work at 90mph FYI. Traveling through Montana seems like a lot of people forget there is a speed limit. 🙂 on the way there we learned that flathead Montana is cherry capital and we stopped and got 3 different cherries fresh picked off the tree 20 minutes before we bought them. The water in the lake was amazing. I had to stop and jump in the water. Then we continued up to glacier park.

That 42 mile drive is beautiful as it is scary. The narrow lanes remind me of Hawaii. 74% of all the glaciers are gone since 1910. Sad to think my kids won’t see them again. At Logan. Pass we saw rams, ground hogs fighting and squirrels. Pretty cool. The views are breath taking that u can drive through the park. IMHO better than pikes peak.

Tomorrow we head to North Dakota. I’m hoping and praying for two things. No more bad weather and clear skies. I haven’t been able to share with my kids the purple skies from all the stars. With only one night left I hope to show them tomorrow. Tomorrow will be the longest leg of my drive. 700 miles. Hoping to do it in 11 hrs.
