      2011 volvo s60 t6- HORRIBLE GAS MILEAGE

      Hi,

Is there anyway for me to increase my gas mileage for my used 2011 Volvo S60 T6 (120k miles)?

I do a mix of city and highway 50/50, and my average is now 16.2 mpg.
When I spent a weekend upstate and drove mostly highway, the max I was able to get was 19.
Is there anyway to improve this? I've already changed spark plugs, and air/cabin filter.

Also, occasionally my car smells like gas/fuel when the air is on, but the AC is off. No longer smells like gas/fuel if AC is on.
      Is this somehow related?

My mechanic was not able to find any leak.

Please help! I'm contemplating selling it due to the these problems.

      2011 volvo s60 t6- HORRIBLE GAS MILEAGE

If Iím doing my math correctly you should be getting more like 18 around town and 25 on the highway (my Ď16 V60RD 3.0).

Any oil consumption or compression issues?

There is definitely an underlying issue here. My '15 T6 RD (3.0L) gets around 18 city and I've seen up to 28 on the highway. In winter, those go down by about 2 MPG but regardless, your numbers definitely indicate something else is wrong.

Fuel filter ever been replaced? Or any check engine lights or pending codes?

Plugs-o2 Sensors-PCV-improper tire inflation-use a high quality full synthetic oil and change on a regular basis-leaky injectors.

Bad o2 sensors can cause a significant drop. Combine that with fouled plugs-dirty/bd PCV-and improper oil grade you can lose a lot of mileage.

      No codes?

Definitely sounds like a bad O2 sensor, or could be an injector stuck open, or an Evaporative emissions system leak. Depends on where the gas smell is originating from (tailpipe, engine compartment, fuel tank. etc). The smell going away with the AC on is likely because the HVAC system is switching to recirculate and not pulling in the fuel vapors from outside the car. I would do a smoke test on the evap system to check for leaks, and maybe try running some fuel system cleaner through it.

FWIW, my 6 cylinder T6 averages ~24 mpg in general. I've seen as low as 19 mpg for the 30 min drive home when there is heavy stop and go traffic. I've seen as high as 31 mpg on 60-70 mile trips to the in-laws which is a combination of 70-75 mph highway driving and 55-60 mph country road cruising.

So there is definitely something wrong with your car. You should never smell gas vapors unless you are filling up the tank.

This might be a silly question but have you confirmed that you're actually getting the gas mileage the car is indicating?
In a previous non-Volvo car the trip computer's reading for mpg was all but useless as it was so inaccurate, I had to use the distance between fill-ups to get a better number.

My 2005 S60 2.5T, front wheel drive, automatic transmission, gets about 22.5 mpg around town, and something like 28 mpg on a trip, at constant highway speed. This is calculated using the odometer, fill up to fill up. I drive conservatively, and rarely accelerate heavily. We live in Texas, and cruising on the highway is typically 65 or 70 mph. I think your car needs some attention in the engine bay.

I’ve never ever had better than 21mpg on a tankful even with extended highway use. When I did a mix of highway and local driving with longer commutes I’d average 18-20mpg driving briskly. Now that I’m driving almost all short trips I am getting about 15mpg on a tank. These are heavy cars with a lot of drivetrain loss.

Does depend a lot on the weight of your boots - around town Iím in the high teens most of the time, canít get 20, on the highway I need a good following wind to get to 30 on the highway at legal speeds, and can drop that to the mid twenties by hurrying up a bit, been doing comparatively little highway driving these past few months, and my overall average since I installed my new TFT DIM a few months back is 18.9... thatís running on regular gas.... I get so few opportunities to use the full power of the engine and havenít seen a significant change in consumption since switching from premium, so the 30-50c difference per gallon is an appreciable saving... thereís perhaps a little less ooomph when accelerating from 45 but not sure how much of that is actual performance loss and how much is imagined.

I just had a stage 3 tune and the associated parts. I found it real hard not to pretend every drive was some sort of time trial. I bet the K16 is fun!
