      M66 Trans oil recommendations

I changed my transmission gear oil about 1.5 years ago with Redline MT90 and noticed that it is getting a bit notchy with this fluid ( I have read others that have said the same thing). I can buy Redline MTL locally, but would love some recommendations on what works best. I am not a fan of the OE fluid because it doesn't seem to minimize the sound of my SMF that is installed, redline has seemed to help a bit with this. In the same breath, I am ok switching back if it is the best for shift quality.

      M66 Trans oil recommendations

Heard good things of Amsoil severe gear for reducing chatter.

I tried liqui moly 75-90 gl4 and it sucked, notchiest shifting Iíve ever felt on an m66.

Iím probably going to try out the severe gear soon, but itís expensive.

I tried a few oem for trans and amsoil for ag and oem for the rest of the car drivetrain. Motul or amsoil for engine oil and oem filter.

I went with Amsoil SG. It didn't really impact the SMF chatter.

Additionally, when it's cold, the transmission is hard to get into 2nd. It's completely fine once everything is warmed up. It did not have those issues prior to the SG

Thanks everyone, I am mainly trying to accomplish a smoother shift again. It sounds like OE may be my best bet. I was considering MTL and amsoil sg, but it sounds like they may have similar issues to the mt90.

It's funny, I have run mt90 in the 944 for years and it shifts great with the exception of very cold weather.

If itís a gl5 fluid itís not to good for the brass syncros. Try sticking to a gl4 fluid.

Iíve been using this with no issues.

The Amsoil Severe Gear 75w-90 states that it is ok as a sub for GL4 and there is a pdf floating around on the internet about their GL5 fluid passing some threshold of safety for brass synchros.

That being said, I've also read that the SG fluid is probably overkill for our gearboxes and have stuck with the GL4 amsoil fluid cited above.

Some people do swear by the SG though. I ran the SG for a short time and I do agree that that GL4 fluid seems to feel better than SG as well as better than OEM. Never have an issue putting it into any gear really, where I did have some issue putting into first with OEM fluid.

I went ahead and put the MTL in it and it seems a good bit better than the MT90. I have only driven it about 15 miles, again already a large improvement in going into gear. I went this route for two reasons. 1. There is a small father son speed shop near by that carries it. 2. I have had great results in my other car with redline gear oil. Time will tell.

I used 1 QT Severe Gear and 1 QT of Redline Lightweight Shockproof oil and it seemed to work for like a year but itís gotten notchy and chatter is louder but it has been quiet before. The shockproof stuff is blue and sorta slippery. Honestly not a fan, itís nearly crunchy when itís hot now it degraded like milk and I shift like a grandpa.

I am switching to 2QTs of Amsoil Manual Gear oil and Im also going to add in a tube of concentrated moly to protect it some and quiet it down. Iíve talked to a bunch of other people running transverse trannyís with SMFs and they seem to like it. Ill flush it twice with my new mix and report back.

This is the moly I got https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CPL8UPY...p_mob_ap_share
