      Question XC-60 Questions

NOTE: I also posted this in an SPA XC-90 forum before I realized that it has broader interest.

Our 2015 XC-60 T6 Drive-E FWD now has 73.5K miles and is running great. It is off warranty, but we bought the Steingold extension. Because of recent great reliability, and concentrating on a new Tesla Model 3, I have not been very active on Sweedspeed. Our engine Burns very little oil, which I can accurately check via the real dipstick (see post in XC60 forum stickies). I added an LED indicator to show when the supercharger clutch is engaged, thereby can minimize supercharger use by running in ECO mode and taking it easy. Early, there was a major problem with a short of the CanBus in the power steering pump, but never any engine issues other than the lame electronic dipstick, which has been improved in later years, I understand.

Could someone please answer the following questions:
      1. There are several posts in an SPA XC-90 thread about the longevity of this engine that mention a spark plug recall for the twin-charged 2L engine, but we were never notified. We just got one for the seatbelt issue, so are still in the loop. How can I check on recalls that should have been done for our specific VIN?
      2. There is not even a dipstick to check ATF level or color. The Manual says it only needs to be changed if you tow a trailer. This has always been a hot topic. Has any consensus been reached on whether or not (and how) to change the ATF of the 8-speed Aisin?
      3. Why do rear brake pads wear twice as fast as front and what can one do to improve that?

Here is a list of service actions, service campaigns, and recalls from Volvo.

      https://www.volvotechinfo.com/index....D508A251F8BECC

You can probably find your car on this list if there are any items and call your dealer. You can probably also check the NHTSA website.

No real consensus on ATF change but it's not too difficult to do it yourself. I just did this yesterday on an XC70 following the instructions on youtube from Volvosweden and it went pretty well, shifting seems a little smoother. Kits at FCPEuro cost $80.

There are lots of theories on rear pad life and I don't think there's anything that can be done about that. We have 55k on our XC60 and I'm still on the original rear pads.

A recent discussion of automatic transmission maintenance on these forums reached a consensus that replacing the ATF fluid at 60,000 mile intervals was reasonable. My 2005 S60, which I purchased used, at 102,000 miles, had the ATF drained and replaced at 110,000 miles. The old fluid was light brown, not pink. The car now has 125,000 miles, and the transmission continues to operate normally.

Thanks to everyone who replied. Following is the latest
      1. How can I check on recalls that should have been done for our specific VIN?
I used your suggestions and determined that our VIN does not qualify for a free new set of plugs. The dealer verified that. The only outstanding recall is for the seat belt cable, for which they don't have parts yet and will not even make an appointment. So I bought a set of plugs using my VCOA discount..still $15 each.
      2. Has any consensus been reached on whether or not (and how) to change the ATF of the 8-speed Aisin?
The dealer says that it is sealed, and they will not change the ATF, which they claim could wreck the transmission! All they would do is check the level using VIDA
      3. Why do rear brake pads wear twice as fast as front and what can one do to improve that?
A different dealer previously said that the rear brakes are used by the stability control, which is why they wear prematurely. Then why didn't Volvo make the pads thicker to compensate?

      NEW QUESTION:
      4. Does anyone know the torque spec for the plugs, with anti-seize?

Not sure on the spark plug torque spec, but you can feel when the crush washer is crushing (higher resistance to turning), and you stop when the washer stops crushing.
Apply no more force than during the washer crush, and there's no danger of alum. thread damage.

      Update on plug replacement

Comparison of original plugs with 73K miles and new plugs form Volvo Dealer, part no 31673604, "the latest plug and same for all Volvo 4 cylinder engines".
Same for both: VOLVO ZXE24HLR7, 31491637 JAPAN, Have pointy electrode like Irridium, measured gap=0.026"
Original plugs: On flat: YU24S, on bottom ring after JAPAN: MU
New plugs: On flat: 1014S, on bottom ring after JAPAN: NC

I expected the new plugs to be more different, given the technical bulletin. Thoughts?

I checked all of the Volvo service receipts plus my own DIY records and found no previous plug replacement. The original plugs, with 73K miles, looked OK, except #3 was a little darker. The gaps were all .026", just like the new plugs.

Here is a simple tool that helps to clean the spark plug seat in the head before you install the new plug. It is just a 5/8" hardwood dowel with blue masking tape over one end. After cleaning each hole, you simply replace it with clean tape.
