Snaped handbrake cable stud - serious mistake or not??

While renewing both handbrake cables I snapped the only bolt securing the cable under the car. I was going to attach images but I don't have permissions Its a bolt through a plastic fastener on the cable mid-way under the car by the rear diff. One for N/S , one for O/S. It was the O/S which snapped after it had come out about 1/4". The size of these bolts ( they are 1.5" M8 - sorry about mixed units) makes me feel that these bolts have another job other than fastening the simple plastic fastening with the cable to the car. The bolts appear to screw into rear diff housing, but there are other bigger bolts which appear to be more suited to that job. Have I made a serious error and am now in mega trouble, or can I just shorten the snapped bolt to allow for the snapped part of the bolt moving 1/4" before snapping off.

Hope this makes some sense with out images.

      Cheers
      Bob.

Just pull the cable a fraction to the side and screw the bracket into the plastic with a torx screw?

I can secure the cable by cutting 1/4" off the existing snapped bolt, my worry is the bolt had an additional function, which it won't now be doing, as its a rather large bolt just to hold the cable to the car.

Hi bob. I agree. It is strangely large and complicated to hold the cable in place. No other function.
