Help, cant get the oil filter of my 2017 S60!

I have a 2017 S60 Inscription which I took to the dealer for my oil change. Normally the filter is easy to take off with my cap like filter wrench that I got at Pep Boys. Not this time! The cap filter wrench is not a perfect fit but usually I dont have a problem. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there an oil filter wrench that is more of an exact fit that you use? If so can you share your experiences. It would be sure appreciated!

I'm guessing it's a Drive-E 2.0 liter 4 cylinder? This is a perfect fit. High quality and durable.

I'm not a technician. But this tool fits like a glove and has zero play. And usually the oil filter housing is such a tight fit with this wrench, I have to lightly knock the sides of the wrench so the housing comes out.

Sounds great. Thank you for sharing! Before I jump for it I am wondering if anyone else had anything that they like as well?

Here's a spare oil filter housing I have. It's an exact fit.

A basic search of part numbers shows your S60 uses oil filter housing part # 31321084. Which is for the 2.0 liter Drive-E engines, including yours. And just a re-confirmation that the wrench fits.

Hey, thanks for the images. I can see as you say, that this is a perfect fit for your filter housing. A picture is worth a thousand words! But I see one potential problem. The filter housing you have looks different than mine! In fact the design is similar to my old S70 GLT. So the difference is the flutes go all the way down the housing whereas your's go only part way and the rest of it is smooth. Strange how we have the same car but the oil filter housings look different.

Mine looks more like this link:

Your photo/link isn't showing up. Maybe a tech can chime in for this. Don't have the same car, just the same engine!

I have to add that when I went out to amazon and looked at the posts some people complained that the oil filter wrench didnt fit their oil filter housing. Now I am confused as to whether or not your solution would work?

Get one of these at Harbor Freight. It will get any filter off guaranteed. I call it "the claw".

Ahhhh I'm seeing this now. Maybe the part number is the updated part for your engine, but yours was built with an older design? Sorry my friend, I thought I could help.

Hey, thanks for trying to help. Sure appreciate the help! One problem on amazon was that some people said, the part didnt fit. They didnt give the yr and model so its hard to follow. The S60 had a 5 cylinder engine and mine has a 4 cylinder. Also mine was made in China given its an Inscription but I dont think that matters.

I'd be willing to bet that filter wrench would still fit your car even though the flutes extend further on your car. It's really the size of the wrench 86mm and the number of flutes that you need to be worried about.

There is a tool specific to Volvo's new 2.0 Drive-e as it is a slight difference in size from the old application...

Make sure you're trying to get the oil filter off when the oil is hot/warm. I was using a breaker bar on my (cheap $3) oil filter tool and thought I would break the filter tool or the Volvo filter housing if I put any more pressure on it. Also tried a generic wrap-around filter tool and thought I would crush the Volvo filter housing if I tried harder.

The car was cold. Warmed it up, tried again, poof, off it came no problem.

I had this problem with our 2015 xc60, also with the driver 4 cyl 2l engine. I wrote an oil change procedure that is in the XC60 stickies. You need a 86mm tool with 16 flutes. I found a 3/8 drive one on eBay. Even then, it helps to add a layer of friction tape inside the cup.

This is a better system than the older versions like in my car that have the 36 mm hex top.

Be sure to also use a torque wrench when you put it back on. I think it's 18 lb.ft for my 2012. It's probably the same for this.

As also suggested by others on Swedespeed, it is a good idea to have a spare oil filter housing in case Murphy's law kicks in during your oil change. You can also use it to try out filter removal tools.
