Leak at rear differential 04 S60R

Was changing out my exhaust and noticed a bunch of oil on the bottom of the rear differential. I have fluid and filter change kit ready to do the haldex service, but I'm concerned about this fluid leak. Anyone have any idea where the leak is coming from and how easy it is to fix?

No noticable leak from the front seal where the shaft goes into the differential.

That looks filthy. Leaks are generally from seals where axles go into rear diff. See if you have any fluid left. There is a fill/drain/correct-level bolt to the left side. If you hear any humming noise coming from rear when driving you may end up needing a differential. If so, look for local part out, it's challenging but not very difficult to change. I got one on VR for parts that will be sent to junker next week but shipping would kill any deal.

Mine was doing the same, just had the two axle seals done, no more leak. I had to have a shop do it as they are a pain in the ass to get to and I don't have a lift.

Man... That's a bummer to hear. It looked really clean on the front where the axle went in... But may be worth a second look.

      No driving symptoms yet.

Its pretty wet, you might want to check oil level before you cook the diff.

Yeah I plan to, but the fluid is really expensive and would like to fix the leak first. Any ideas on where to look besides where the shaft goes in?

Take the wheel off and you can see where the cv shaft goes in on either side. The fill plug is on the back up by the muffler, its a pain to fill. Get a transfer pump from Harbor Freight it will make it easier. Mobile 1 GL5 synth gear oil is fairly cheap at WalMart.

After I replaced both axle seals mine was still leaking.
Had to take the housing appart and reseal it.

Dry rear diff for 3 years now.
