Does a service history hurt resale/trade-in?

I'm coming upon 4 years of ownership of my XC90 and I've used the factory warranty more than a handful of times to address a variety of issues at my local dealer (ranging from small software issues to more involved stuff). When it's time to sell or trade this vehicle in, is this service history going to hurt the value? I guess I'm wondering if the dealer reports this information on a Carfax or something and if my vehicle is going to look like a lemon on paper. Most of my visits were pretty minor: squeaky brakes, lumbar in seat malfunctioning (that one took about 7 trips to correct), etc.

      Thanks for any insight.

Primarily miles & age, secondarily condition & demand: those are the factors that affect used car prices according to my independent Volvo garage.
Personally, the more maintenance history available to me the better if I were in the market. When I purchased my last 2 used Volvos, the availability of the maintenance history was the final deciding factor for my (favorable) decision to purchase them.

You may or may not get asked about it if the entries appear on carfax and if you have perfectly reasonable explanations (it sounds like you do) I wouldn't worry about it. The used car manager is going to be much more concerned about the condition of the vehicle, miles, deferred maintenance, tires, etc.

When you sell it or trade it to a dealer, they will nit pick every little blemish in the paint and any small ding. And somehow this devalues it more than beating the hell out of it and neglecting necessary services.

But when the dealer sells it, they will talk up every little thing about it.

In sales, integrity is a gray area.

We have sold all of our Volvos ourselves and always provide a CarFax printout for anyone interested. We keep our Volvos in great condition and always do the required maintenance. Never, not once, has anyone asked me any questions about issues with the car or reviewed in detail anything on a CarFax. I also keep detailed records and usually hand over a file folder with all the service/maintenance information. While everyone is impressed with the documentation, again, no one has ever asked me about it. As far as a trade in I can't imagine a dealership scrutinizing the service/repair history. As somone above said they seem to be more interested in the consmetics. If you are thinking of a trade in spend some time detailing your car before approaching a dealer about a trade...and get ready for a very low offer. I've heard people have more success with CarMax.

Why not buy a Carfax and see what your dealer has reported on it?

For trade perspective it probably won't make a big deal, if any at all... and the longer you own it the less it matters. What most customers look for on a car fax is if there was damage or accidents... and if it has been serviced. Very few customers I've had over the many years. took note to excessive service (some have, but honestly, it's pretty rare). As such, I've never once used it or seen it used as a way of lowering the cars value for trade, and I've worked at places that will low ball folks. Where I am now, we give pretty honest trades, and rarely have surprises for customers unless they've not been elsewhere. Honestly, the only thing I've used a car fax like that for is to encourage an extended warranty.

If you try to sell it yourself I think it would probably matter more. The type of folks buying expensive used luxury vehicles privately are going to be a bit more picky since they aren't getting a certified warranty, or even a dealership to complain to.
